A few points though, by the time that contract ends Barton will be 32, and may not be a great contract...and it's a player option not team. That's factored in. Barton gets a secured contract into his 30s, vs going for max money he could get.

Barton did not test the market, he simply resigned w/ DEN. He spent his whole career there, so not surprising. Taj did the same w/ us.

But Lavine has no history w/ Chicago, and last I heard both parties were interested in testing the market and Chicago just matching.
