Bad franchises pay $$$ for name coaches, then fire them and eat their contracts. Either they don't understand that the coach isn't their underlying problem, or they do understand but they make the changes to "show" the fans that they are taking action.

Good franchises focus on getting the right players. If that happens, they will win. For example, the Celtics haven't fired a head coach for basketball reasons since M.L. Carr in 1997.

At least the Pistons owner gives a crap.

I always thought Monty would be a good coach; which he seemed to be for a few months and then the downfall.

I'd coach Detroit for a season if you paid me $78 million, I guess.

It really is remarkable. The guy gets 13 million a year for the next 5 years to not show up for work. It's better than most lottery payouts. Good gig if you can get it.

He also wasn't a hall of fame coach or anytging like that when they signed him. He was good, but where would you rank him (at that time) out of all the current coaches?

It was a bad contract the minute he signed it, but I give the Pistons some credit for moving on (even though it was their fault in the first place).

Random, but watching some old games and just realized that Longley was better than the opposing center in all three finals he played in.

Yeah, that was back in the day when teams felt they had to have a 7 footer in the middle, even if the 7 footer was objectively a worse basketball player than the team's backup #4.

But Luc wasn't bad. Big body, decent midrange jumper, a calm and steady player.

Is ESPN just copying reddit posts as content now.
We just had the Jaren Jackson "home cooked stat keeper DPOY" thing.
right now nobody has Bigger Numbers than Jackson. If he keeps this up through the end of the regular season, it will be impossible to deny that he is the best defensive player in basketball.

That is, unless Jackson's statistics are the result of home-cooked books. In a Reddit post published Saturday, user AdMassive6666 crunched the numbers through Jackson's first 32 games played and found that a surprising and unlikely seeming number of Jackson's blocks and steals—66 of 101 blocks and 22 of 32 steals—came in Memphis's 16 home games. According to AdMassive6666, Jackson has been credited with five or more combined blocks and steals ("stocks") in 11 home games this season, versus just three road games. Additionally, AdMassive6666 identified seven instances in "recent" Grizzlies games when Jackson appeared to be credited in error, according to AdMassive6666's judgment, for plays either made by Jackson's teammates or not made at all. It's all extremely fishy and/or rat-smelling

I don't think a new coach will really change much for the current Lakers. In a year or two it wouldnt surprise me if theyre looking for another coach.

One thing I don't get is: why does JJ want the job? I'm sure he was doing ok with his podcast/media work and probably did ok with his NBA money. Is it the attention that comes with the Lakers job?

Not everyone is cut out to be a head coach nor is it something that everyone wants to do (if theyre being honest with themselves).

The West is projected to be even more of a bloodbath next year and the Lakers were a play-in team with both Bron and AD playing 70+ games. Maybe they make multiple roster changes but I won't be shocked if it's a s***show in LA with a rookie HC with zero coaching experience.

I like JJ as a commentator, but just don't see him as being a good coach during this gig, given his lack of experience.

why would he take this job when he's gonna get scapegoated soon as things go wrong? Hiring a first time coach doesnt scream "going after a title" to me. And this is coming from a person that as an X's and O's coach, JJ is gonna be good cuz of his IQ.

The In Season Tournament had more intensity. Putting 3 days between each game made me forget there was even a FINALS game that night and I am someone who was watching 3 games a night during the season.
