i think the risk is trubisky starting and having a good season next year

Trubusky will spend his 4th season on the bench as a backup. No QB with his problem of reading defense and inaccuracies will even turn it around. It's usually one or the other, not both glaring deficiencies at the same time.

Mariota can read the defenses and make good decisions. The problem with Mariota is poor O-line protection and inaccuracies. QBs can improve on their inaccuracies with time, just like Drew Brees from LA to NO.

Pace best bet is to shore up the O-line into elite status and beg Mariota for a one year trial. If Mariota does well here, he may be our long term option. I also think that Nagy and Mariota can potential be a great pair. But, Trubusky is done in Chicago.

Just be thankful that we didn't lock this bust to 30-38 mil/yr for the next 4-5 years. That will be crippling to our franchise.

However, it looks it has turned out to be a poor bet. The Bears look like they will have to go through a rebuild again soon and would have been better off stock piling talent than having Mack except for the personal joy we got out of that 12 win season last year which was pretty satisfying.

Just a reminder of the Bears first round picks under Ryan Pace:

Roquan Smith - Ehhh
Mitchell Trubisky - Trending towards a bust
Leonard Floyd - Ehhh, probably going to walk after the season
Kevin White - Bust

Of course, I'd rather have a 1st round pick when I'm bad than not, but I'd still rather have Khalil Mack than our 1st given our draft history and historical odds.

The amount of 1st round busts under Pace is very concerning. That's why I'm completely against him using any future draft capitals to draft another QB high. He needs to turn it around in this upcoming season with his self-made limited resources in order to have another chance.

No GM will last long in this league without batting at least .35 on first rounders.

Floyd isn't a bust and Smith has figured it out it seems.

2/4 are starters with still more room to grow in their careers.

Overall, Floyd had an underwhelming Bears career. I won't say he's a bust, but he certainly hasn't been worth his draft pedigree.

I like Roquan more than any of the other picks, but he still hasn't been anything special so far. Either way, our first round picks under Pace have been disappointing.

If you think your GM can't bring in talent through the draft then it's time to dump your GM. Somewhat of a separate conversation though.

The Bears, based on history, probably win 9 games last year without Mack and still lose in the 1st round of the playoffs. This year looks like a lost year either way. If you had 2 additional 1sts and 10 million in cap room (or whatever the differential is after accounting for the picks salary) then it's pretty easy to make the argument that this would be better than your future with Mack at this point.

It doesn't mean it was an awful gamble. If Trubisky had succeeded and given you very good growth this year then you'd be positioned to be a superbowl contender. Just because you swing and miss doesn't mean you shouldn't have swung, but the outcome is the Bears would have probably been better off long term not doing the trade.

1) it's irrational to suggest that a FO that has not done well w/ 1st round picks but has done VERY well with 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks has a specific blind spot when it comes to the highest level college talent. a sample size of a handful of 1st rounders is simply not big enough. but the overall sample of dozens of draft picks is mostly positive for the pace regime

2) as i've repeated countless times, the cost of trading for khalil mack is not merely the draft picks given up. it is the cap space given up as well. which makes the following photo emblematic of what was wrong with the trade:

Image

the 380 pound monster of a human being who has mack on his heels there was signed with about 70% of the annual cap space freed up by trading mack. the raiders run blocking ranking went from 13th last season to 4th this season, with that signing being the only major change to the offensive line. there will be another significant free agent piece signed in the coming offseason with the remainder of that money. and what else may well be happening as a result of what is going on in the photo? josh jacobs gashing the bears defense. jacobs was taken with the first of the picks given up in the mack trade and is currently co-favorite to win offensive rookie of the year. he is on track to rush for 1500 yards

3) i can only hope that the bears' woes this season have been enough to dispel any notion that an edge rusher is anywhere close in terms of importance to an nfl team to what the quarterback is

wow that means we have finished worse than the Lions in our own division 4 of the last 5 years? BRUTAL
Does Virginia understand that? The LIONS

I'm also dying on this "We should not have traded J Howard hill" because it was a bad move and was not a production issue why - but a personality issue with him and Nagy. Nagy is floundering currently

Pederson was asked about the Jordan Howard trade early in the offseason and whether he surprised by the terms to get the running back. He didn’t want to speculate on why Chicago traded him for a low draft pick — although did quickly mention that Howard might not have fit into what Matt Nagy was doing —, but emphasized the Eagles studied his tape and was excited to get him.

The head coach also talked about how Howard was establishing himself as a leader early in the offseason.

“This guy, he’s just a humble guy, he’s a hungry guy. He wants to perform, he wants to help us win and he really fit well into that running back room.”

Matt Nagy is an asshat who can’t gamelan a running attack to save his life. David Montgomery is a better back than Howard in all facets of the running and receiving game.

Nagy needs some self reflection and improves as a play caller from here. Otherwise, his butt can join Ryan Pace on the unemployment line 15 months from now.

I feel like such a clown for picking Trubisky to be my starting QB in fantasy league lol, I thought it was steal to getting him in the 7th rd in a 16tm league

Where'd you see anything mentioning Howard didn't fit with Nagy personality wise?

I do not think Cam is the long-term answer, but I'd be game to experiment for a year; he can't be worse than Trubisky. The only issue is that if Cam is no longer a dual threat, then he is a mediocre QB who will present similar issues as Trubisky.

Outside of Trubisky being garbage, you have to wonder if a QB can succeed and/or develop in Matt Nagy's offense. I think his offense is all frills, little substance.

Not even remotely close to want the Bears to rebuild. Believe it or not, the Bears not that far from contending, they just need to fixed the dang gum QB. Get a competent QB (not even a great QB, just one that knows what they are doing) and the Bears can go far.

Trubisky needs to be as far away from Chicago in 2020 as possible.

Doubt the Bears are a "competent QB" away from winning anything meaningful. If they had the 16th best QB in the league, say prime Jay Cutler, the Bears aren't winning a superbowl.
