Re: Bulls Summer League
End of the day… You can’t really teach it, but Pat is a gentle giant - he needs to add some intensity to his personality. I’m afraid that beyond Caruso, nobody on this team has that.
Lonzo and DeRozan are as calm as can be (along with Vuc). There’s a lot of talent, but it’s going to be a very mild-mannered group.
You watch guys like Mitchell, Green, Suggs, and there’s a manic intensity. Doesn’t mean they’ll hit the NBA and win games, but you worry about a squad with a bunch of guys driving on neutral.

This is my biggest concern with this group. No edge.
Zach flashed that intensity at times last season and showed it defensively in the Olympics but he has to play with it every game for long stretches and then demand it from his teammates. This is why MJ is the GOAT.

Agreed we need a bit more teeth on this team and Pat is overly timid. I get it he got boosted up big from bench player @ FSU to starter in NBA at a young age but that has to change a bit. As mentioned though, he is well down the pecking order on offense so I don't expect him to show that offensively at all this year, but defensively I hope we can see improvement in the aggression area.

Gentle Giant. Good one.
Have the same observation about Williams. I was hoping some Olympic experience would toughen him up. Bigfgest reason i want to watch some SL, but hard to find time.
He's only 20, and IIRC didn't he work as a florist growing up.
He might just be a nice family kid with a huge frame. I think Zach is very similar kid - sans the size.
I don't think this is where a coach screaming "be tougher" works like Phil did with Horace Grant.
But a good mentor with the right personality might help, I think we just traded our best mentor in Thagic
maybe we'll sign a vet down the road that helps him like a Jared Dudley.
I try to think that Jimmy Butler was pretty chill and an innocent homeless kid form Tomball Texas his first few years -
look at him now.....

Re: Bulls Summer League
A nice boring summer league game.
Everything was as expected but 1 play I remember.
Pat Williams showed he is an NBA starter playing with guys who will play in Europe. Was the best player on the court for most of it.
Simonivich and Ayo showed they can play 5-15 minutes and not be completely miserable. Could grow into strong rotation players or never materialize.
Dotson was better than everyone else but likely a fringe roster guy.
No one else flashed anything but that one shot block for Baxter. Rare athleticism.
My favorite thing about Summer league is always finding the diamond in the rough. Just didn't see anyone.

I did not see the game.
Question: Can Simonivich guard defensively other Forwards on the perimeter or is he more like Vucevic and better as a backup Center ?

In the very limited time I saw him play, I think his defense would be more suited in the perimeter. If you're playing him at C, we might have a WCJ situation again where he'd be completely overwhelmed by other centers / athletic players.
He honestly reminds me of the way Lauri plays... shoots 3s, can drive it a bit, has a drag step move at the rim, a lot of missed dunks of the highlight variety that he couldn't quite finish because of his size.

Re: Bulls Summer League
Marko does look like a spinning image Lauri-lite (albeit a better rebounder and bit better at banging in the post imo). Surely less athletic and long; on other hand, his IQ and awareness seem a little better.
No denying it though; he’s gonna be a defensive liability, particularly protecting the rim. He could work in low-minute lineup with Bradley, Troy and Caruso. I’ll take him for a sub-$2m prospect.
Folks are talking about getting a starting defensive PF, but I think a 7’defensive C for the bench is the real key. A guy who can sub in for Vuc and protect the rim if things get dicey.
Tyson Chandler - where you at?

What is Bradley? He isn’t our defensive backup C

I thought Marko S looked phenomenal, all things considered. I've got high hopes for him. He's already got better instincts & ball-handling abilities than I saw from Markkanen at the same age, and will undoubtedly be the better playmaker. Wonderful pick-up by Mr. AK

Sure but he's 6'9 and actually has some slightly negative defensive metrics. He looked like a boss stuffing Wendell, Lauri and Coby, but everybody looked like a boss against those 3.
I dunno; maybe Miles Turner isn't a crazy idea.

I did want to add that he ran the floor very well and had decent hands/touch around the basket.
I'm going to try to stay away from the Lauri comparison.

Marko looked more mobile and able to put the ball on the floor more than Lauri, but less explosion off two feet on both offense/defense. Seems like more of a finesse guy. I'd say he reminded me more of Dario than Lauri.

I agree with MrSparkle: he looks “thicker” in term of build, core strength, but a touch less agile, explosive.
Honestly, he reminds me of a younger Vuc (his first season in PHi) but without young Vuc’s manic intensity and rebounding.

Re: Bulls Summer League
That’s why I think he can play rotation minutes as early as this year. He didn’t do anything on offense but I was impressed by his defense & awareness on that end. I think he can come in and focus on a defensive backup role whilst also being the secondary ball handler.
Posters were talking earlier about the lack of players with an ‘edge’. Ayo needs to focus on playing with an edge every time he hits the floor and I do honestly think he can be a 15-20 minute backup with his ability to guard multiple positions.

Excited to see how Patrick evolves. This is a player that obviously has not been a focal point, and struggled A bit in the new role. But this is the time to try things out. Hopefully he comes out of the same aggressiveness, and has the mental fortitude to deal with the inevitable failures. What I don't want is for him to coast. That's really the only negative outcome, other than injury.
