I messed around in The Capulator and I was able to sign Lonzo to a 4-year/$83M contract and re-signed Theis to a 3-year/$36M contract with Lauri taking the QO. I had to waive/stretch Thad and Aminu and traded Sato to the Celtics for their TPE.
Even if Lauri did take the QO, the problem is his cap hold would be high until he signs it. He certainly isn't going to sign the QO before Lonzo agrees to a deal. He would only sign it as a last resort.
Ignoring the fact that Lauri wouldn't take the QO for the moment. It looks like Boston just used their TPE on Josh Richardson though you could possibly fit Sato in somewhere for someone's cap room or TPE elsewhere.
Ah, I see. For my scenario to work, Lauri would have to accept the QO
before we sign Lonzo, which as you said is highly unlikely to happen. Isn't there some obscure loophole where we could renounce Lauri, only to, I guess, de-nounce him later and offer him the QO? I swear someone posted that here the other day.
I found a way for my scenario to still happen, but its dependent upon trading all three of Thad, Sato, and Aminu for cap space, Lonzo willing to sign a 4-year/$69M contract, and Lauri then accepting the QO, all of which is unlikely. This is pipe dream level though, as in this situation we're able to sign Lonzo, keep Theis, Lauri, and Temple, and add Doug McDermott:
