I just realized Rivera with the in-person interview got the Bears halfway there already. Weaver or Freeman could be the other(s) if they want to wrap this up ASAP, and they should

Neither would do it if they thought it was to get by the rule.

It’s the Bears, so I expect they are literally considering Weaver. And if Freeman thought he could get the job and wants it, he should. I gotta believe the Bears would definitely have Freeman on a real list of hire-able, crazy not to. He would be an exiting hire. I don’t know if I want him over Ben Johnson, but he’s pretty attractive.

I doubt Freeman ever interviews. His has the National Title games coming up and after that i would assume the Bears will know who the next coach is.

Maybe, maybe not. The National title game is 1/20. That’s the earliest that Ben Johnson could commit to anything….the earliest.
My guess is that the Bears are sending smoke signals out to BJs camp saying hey “if you want the job, we want you….bit don’t think for one second that we won’t go after a name that’s just as big as yours….and oh, yeah!! We’ve got connections to this guy as well….”

If the Bears are seriously in the Ben Johnson sweepstakes as plan A, they have to wait to know because they cannot hire/agree to hire until after the Lions are knocked out, and/or Johnson is hired by the Raiders. They may not know for a long time after the 20th. Freeman would be a sweet backup or alternative plan in the meantime if the Bears are not necessarily Johnson or bust. Or are in a bigger hurry. If the Lions are going to the Superbowl, Freeman could interview in person right after the title game. He could probably interview sooner, but I wouldn’t expect him to.

For my team the 49ers this was the headline January 17th:
"The 49ers are expected to offer Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan their vacant head coaching job, and Shanahan is almost certain to accept the position, according to sources familiar with both parties' intentions. Because of NFL rules, the two sides cannot formally agree to a deal until after the Falcons' season is over, but barring an unforeseen change of heart on either side, Shanahan will eventually be signed to a multi-year contract."

Meanwhile, not seriously on the radar of the teams going after the top head coach candidates. So yeah, probably the Bears coach.
Are you simply an eternal pessimist that has been scorned by decisions past. Or are you actively rooting for the Bears to screw this up?
I asked a few days ago what a successful off season would look like to everyone. It wasn’t at all surprising that nobody responded. So I will ask the question to you directly. What would Poles need to do in order for you to consider this off season successful? Or better yet, what would you consider to be the right HC hire for the Bears?

Understood. But what would it take to change your mind. BJ, Brady, Carroll, Freeman? None of the above?

That’s exactly my point. I believe that’s the point that the Bears want to get to with Johnson. So I’m wondering if Freeman’s name being inserted here is the Bears way of trying to draw that informal commitment from Johnson.

-Raiders “enamored” with Ben Johnson. The name to watch
-Bears are interviewing “basically everyone”
- Bears names to watch who were in action this weekend …Brian Flores, Ben Johnson, Todd Monken, Arthur Smith, Kyle Brandt.

They’re gonna need to stop focusing on expanding their endless list, and start focusing on chopping down the list. And then hire one of the top people that pleases me, a fairly standard, very short list.

Bears also interviewed David Shaw but it's unclear whether it was in person.

NE absolutely aced their hire. They had a premier guy in mind without overthinking, and tackled him in the backfield like Lance Briggs. There may be better head coaches than Ben Johnson. But probably not better candidates from all we currently know. But we don’t know a lot.

Who knows if they aced their hire or not? Only time will tell. They may have been so enamored with getting a former Patriot player, someone who knows what "the Patriots Way" is, that they bypassed other, and perhaps better candidates, in a rush to get Vrabel.

Re: Bears 10.0: GM and coach watch before the draft
Here's what my successful offseason would look like:
1). Get a coaching staff that can get the most out of our players, esp. Caleb.
2) Get a minimum of 3 new starting caliber O linemen. (I can live with Braxton at LT, but we need 2 guards and a center for sure).
3) Get an above average pass rusher, and def. tackle.
4) Get another safety, and CB.

Bears are Bjs top choice for sure
From the MSN article that says they have inside information that the bears aren’t #1 on BJ list.
General manager Ryan Poles reportedly wants Johnson. But the Bears aren’t the only front office in the league that wants to take a chance on the 38-year-old offensive mastermind.
Johnson having options doesn’t hurt his leverage in contract negotiations. The more he appears to be interested in the Raiders job, the more his agent can ask for better terms from the Bears.
Why would you be worried about asking for better terms from a team that’s allegedly not #1 on your list? Especially when you’re #1 on everyone else’s list. Clearly he wants the bears and wants a better offer and using other teams as leverage.
Will ownership play ball is the question.
Theres no way in hell he looks at the Raiders roster construction compared to the Bears and wants the Raiders. But Tom Brady is believable “leverage” and he’s playing that card. But the Bears are obviously his #1 choice.

My take on the Ben situation. The Bears let him know already there’s a strong desire by them for him to take the job. Short of an informal commitment, they have to keep interviewing people. Freeman is incidentally part of that, but assuming the Bears are seriously intending to have Ben Johnson their next coach, they have matched the Raiders in communication of a desire to hire as first choice. Freeman is risky without any NFL experience. And Ben probably knows that. At this current development stage, I would hire Pete Carroll, and designate Freeman as assistant head coach/head coach in training to learn the NFL and the job. But Freeman’s not gonna want to do something like that right now. Rather put more time in at ND and get his own gig when he has more skins on his resume.
By the way, that’s a lot of big names in one organization. Carroll, Poles, Freeman, Warren. The Bears would need a bigger boat.

Well it’s not just the roster, the GM/personnel position is basically being offered for Ben to fill. It’s a little more than a roster comparison deal. The Raiders need a quarterback plan, and Ben will be the one designing that play. What if Ben loves Jaxson Dart, this year’s Jayden Daniels?

To add: This is an aspect I have not seen mentioned elsewhere….While people have mentioned the Raiders have a new stadium as a possible lure (unlikely), that stadium happens to be a dome. Which could plausibly add a certain level of practical interest to an offensive coordinator used to playing in a dome.
