be a "'maybe' be one of three top teams in the East "? This past season the Bulls were pretty much a top-3 team and that was before acquiring another superstar, re-integrating their hometown superstar and whatever other roster updates via draft the Bulls made.

I'm not even mentioning how mortal Miami looked and how downright garbage the Pacers have been (esp if they lose Stephenson)

Even when the Bulls were at their worst these past years, they've been way better than the majority of Eastern teams. If this FA/Draft thing works out, the Bulls will be fielding the best post-Jordan team yet.

Anyway, bottom line is that Taj going to the pitch indicates that he is staying. He's on a fair deal so that is no big deal.

While this somewhat reduces the leverage the Bulls have, the Bulls can still offer about 18 million per year to start if they dump everyone but Jo, Taj, Rose, McDermott and Aussie. Keep Jimmy and that goes down to 16.5, which even there isn't exactly a low ball offer (almost 2 million more than James Harden makes this year).

Houston is in the same position as the Bulls in terms of salaries - in that they would have to gut their roster to everyone but Howard, Harden, Beverly, Terrance Jones and Nick Johnson to have about 20 million to offer. They can keep a little more cheap depth than the Bulls (basically Isaiah Canaan and Donitas Maj) and still offer 18 mil.

Dallas needs to resign Dirk and is near 35 million without him on the Books, so even assuming he drops to 10Million, they will be in the Bulls situation (and actually have to dump a few small contracts to get 18mil).

Lakers have a lot of room, but way more holes to fill. Nash and Kobe take them to 33 million.

So if it's near Max or bust, then chances are Melo stays in NY. If 16ish million dollars to start is acceptable, then the Bulls should probably be considered front-runners.

is readily achievable.

With a sign and trade maybe they keep Snell and/or MJD, too, and keep some exceptions to use for better depth, but send out future picks.
