And for that matter, how successful was Ditka after he left the Bears? Not very. He may have been the right coach at the right moment for that team. Or he may have just been in a great situation thanks to Jim Finks and others who put that team together. With all the talent on that team, Ditka only got them to the super bowl once, which was a shame.

More than I expected him to take. Tom Brady could be impressive for the Raiders. We’re under the impression BJ is interested in teams with quarterbacks though. But BJ does indicate he needs well structured teams with good standards and practices as well. I wonder if a team that presents what he is looking for on the organization’s front can overcome the current lack of a quarterback.
The Raiders have been one of the worst run franchises in the league for over a decade.

Bears haven't picked the right head coach since Ditka in 1982. So i guess? Im not exactly super pumped over Josh McDaniels or Tommy Reese.
People judge the coach solely on whether or not they win, and win big. It's often not really the coach that determines that. So to say the Bears, or McCaskey, has picked the wrong coach for all these years is not really accurate, IMO.
Its 100% accurate. McCaskey's have always been the owners and have always picked the people to run the Bears. There is a reason the Bears have zero playoff wins since George took over. Because they don't know what they are doing. They passed on Bruce Arians because he wouldn't do a mock press conference and hired CFL coach Marc Trestman. As far as coaching impact in the NBA maybe a coach isn't as meaningful to wins. But in the NFL coaching in king.

Out of those four, we are easily the best situation. And like it’s been obvious for a while now. Johnson wants to coach Williams. My inference is that the only way he’s not the bears coach is if poles is dumb enough not to offer him the job or they somehow bungle the interview.

Perfect example on to why we should ignore all “reports”. Has it even been a week since everyone was reporting that poles was scared that Johnson would push him out? Not there are multiple reports saying he’s the front man on who wants to bring Johnson in.
Please let this be over by Saturday. I desperately hoe to hear “Ben Johnson has been hired to be bears new HC but will finish the season as lions OC” on Sunday.

You might not know until February.

From what I glean from these most recent reports and Warren and McCaskey insisting on being a part of the process but giving Poles "final say" is that they want to touch base with as many people as possible and just let Poles make the final choice. This kinda aligns with the the last coaching search. They probably want to be involved just to feel more important to the football ops than they really are. Whatever they are doing, I truly do hope its Poles decision, regardless of who it is.

We should obviously not ignore all reports. If Schefter or Rappaport tweet something, it's worth noting. If some guy whose Twitter bio indicates he's an undergraduate at U of I, like the Tweet above, maybe not so much.

If Poles is truly a GM, it should be Poles’ decision. It should basically be his own show, but it may not be. I read somewhere that (opposite from the Flus hiring) Poles will choose the final candidates for the committee rather than the reverse. So it may not be his own call exclusively. But someone correct me if I’m wrong.

That is already better than our own track record.

Lovie in 2004 was the right hire.

Idk. I haven’t heard from anyone credible that this won’t be Poles’ decision. Just looking at it from a fans perspective, it really feels like this process is going as planned and that the number one guy is still the number one guy. Most of this other stuff is just noise. It’s like I said yesterday. Poles will be fine just as long as he tunes out all of the media and fan noise and just focused on making the right hire.

So you would pass on Tom Coughlin? Oh and just because... Naperville's own Sean Payton was the Ben Johnson of 2004 and was given a big raise to stay in Dallas.

I would if I felt like a different guy was better for my team, which the Bears obviously did. Lovie Smith wasn’t chopped liver. He had some really good years here and one could argue that he shouldn’t have been fired when he was.

He did have some good years. But just 4 10 win seasons in 9 years and missed the playoffs 6x including 3 straight years.

The point remains that Lovie wasn’t a bad hire and one could easily argue that (despite the other two names that you mention) Smith was the right hire. Even during the rough seasons, that team always ran through a wall for him.

A superbowl appearance and a conference finals was impressive considering the talent and injuries the Bears had.

Bears had the best defense in the league (maybe one of the best all time) and probably win the Superbowl with a better QB. This wasn't some plucky underdog team.
