I'm no huge fan of Smith, but let's be real here. He would be a massive upgrade over the crap we have at PF. He's ultimately a flawed play and not worth his contract, but Jesus we were playing Salmons at the 4 because we weren't getting anything from anyone else.

Its a fair point. But given the length and amount of Smith's contract, don't you think the better option is to just be patient and draft, sign, or trade for a better solution? Its not like we're passing on Amare here due to injury concerns. Smith is a highly paid, substantially flawed player. He might be better than our lowly paid, substantially flawed players, but I don't think thats a legitimate reason to lie him around our collective neck.

The entire reason I'm for this, assuming the guys going are Tyrus+Deng, which I find most likely, anyway, is that I'm not seeing opportunity cost. This trade assumes Amare and Bosh aren't close to leaving as of yet. Nor anybody approaching being better than Smith. I happen to not like him, but recognize that he's a productive player with still considerable upside. And the cost is another player who is productive with considerable upside, but at a position of no need, in Deng. And Thomas simply wouldn't get minutes, or be extended with Smith on the team, anyway.

The problem is that we don't have, and aren't projected to have, a draft pick high enough to get a legit starter at PF. We don't have any real trade assets, and our chances of signing someone are a crap shoot. Besides, is Amare or Bosh on a contract 8 mil more per anymore of a bargain than Smith? Yeah those two are better players, but they aren't 3 tool guys like a Garnett that would instantly make us better on both sides of the court. I mean, these are our options:

Draft a starting PF: This is an unlikely occurrence given our draft position and likely future spots. Plus, you are talking about waiting upwards of 4 years before you have a starter.

Signing a starting PF: We really have two shots w/ Amare and Bosh. I still think both are unlikely. It's a lot more likely that they are traded to a team willing to absorb salary than them walking as FAs somewhere.

Trading for a PF: This is by far the best option. However, since we don't have any real trading assets, the only thing we can get is a flawed player on a long contract. Smith is as good as anyone imho.

Of course I think we will go after the first two options because they are cheapest. I just don't have high hopes for success.

Smith isn't a massive upgrade over Tyrus, though, not IMO. If you extend Tyrus' stats to Smith's minutes, they're not that far apart. In style, they're almost identical, they finish well on dunks, can block well as help defense. Smiths' jumper is only slightly better than Tyrus.

The one thing Smith does well is that he can still finish around the basket on non-dunks...that's really only going to be worth Smith's contract if we plan on using him as one of our primary scorers...probably a bad idea.

In pursuing a 2nd star to pair w/ Rose, i have a feeling Tyrus as an asset to trade is a little more valuable than Smith just because of the Smith's contract issue. ATL themselves balked at signing Smith to this much money, and he almost went to another team.

Smith is another cripple from the neck up.
Luol Deng's contract is a cancer eating at the Bulls.

I don't think Smith is the answer at the PF position. Tyrus somewhat replicates Smith's strengths and weaknesses. What is the point is that? Regurgitating similar talent/skill set that is never successful in the first place is never good. Which is the case here.

Josh Smith could be had for Noah and your #1, I believe. Deng wouldnt work because we need more jump shooters, and one of the keys of trading Smith is that the Hawks can move Horford to power forward, which is why Noah works for the Hawks.

Tyrus second half of the season I believe was close to 14/8 to 15/9. Josh Smith had 15/7. Josh Smith though had more minutes in the 2nd half than Tyrus.

They both are not natural PF's but more of a combo forward who can only keep up with PF's. They both rely on their athleticism. They both are dumb.

We have Josh Smith, his name is Tyrus Thomas except Tyrus can block shots, Josh Smith can't do anything on D.

Yeah, it's too bad Smith can't block shots. Otherwise he would be a force on D.

ha ha wow, can't believe that was said. I would say both players are the same but smith is more developed.
