If teams are going to keep doubling Zach on the perimeter and refusing to help off of Lauri then PWill is going have a lot of opportunities like he did last night. Thad and Sato will find him if he is active without the ball.

Donovan said after the game that the Raptors were playing a triangle and two last night, with the two obviously on Zach and Lauri. Will be interesting to see if teams continue that. We ought to be able to slice that up.

I'm with you. I actually liked the metaphor king used, he said the kid has all the keys to the Ferrari, just doesn't quite know how to drive it yet.

I'll go ahead and make a sig bet that Mikal is better by RPM this year than Zach.

He's definitely flashing skills and a good feel for the game despite being a rookie on a weak team.
I think an entire off-season will do him good. If he can aim to be a 15/5/3 guy on elite or near elite efficiency I'll be happy. That would make him an ideal 3/4th option on a contending team.
Playing alongside Thad will do wonders for his game as well as someone he should learn from. Keeping Thad for this purpose alone is worthwhile.

I wanna get there so badly. I just want to see Pat force the issue since every superstar I can think of was aggressive out of the gate. Even rookie Kawhi had more nasty to him. Hopefully this new line-up continues to unlock him.

i feel like there have been sporadic efforts to flash a little more aggression and he hasn’t kept it up because his handle isn’t really where it needs to be for it to work out favorably. obviously he’s not a particularly assertive player naturally, but i also think part of the “problem” is that he’s smart enough to feel hesitant about doing things that are probably not going to work out well based on his current skillset
i still think his upside hinges primarily on whether he can develop that off-the-bounce game. everything else, he’s flashed enough for me to be real excited about.

I disagree, semantically, about the whole handles thing. I'll contrast PWill to Ben Gordon, who had trouble controlling the Ball when he dribbled, to the point where you wouldn't want him running and dribbling because he'd occasionally just lose the ball without anyone else stripping it. PWill's ability to dribble and move around seem pretty good, to me it's more of an awareness issue when he's dribbling as to what moves in relation to defender positioning leaves him exposed to being stripped. It's kinda similar to the cringeworthy spin-move in the paint that Lauri used frequently last year that resulted in about 90% turn-over rate. Lauri has fortunately not used it this year much.

So is Pat a SF, PF, or both?

He’s fluid. Which is one of the reasons I’m all in on adding a playmaking small forward if we can’t find a playmaking guard. Or a hybrid like him, but more heavy on playmaking (though I think Patrick Lee Williams will end up being an excellent playmaker himself).
Ideally I think he’s more SF than PF. But I don’t think it matters that much.

PaW the playmaker doesn't get enough attention. I think as his game expands he will be able to handle and create off the bounce for himself and others. I think out of the post when doubles come he will be really good too. I could also see him in the high post roll Thad role. He makes smart decisions and the right reads.

Totally agree. Simply put, I see the tools in place for Patrick Lee Williams to basically be able to do it all. Three level scorer, playmaker, defender, open court game, half court game, multi-positional, iso game, off ball game, you name it.
It’s all there. It’s just a question of achievement. It’s not like he’s the only guy who’s had a full toolbox. Some excel, some don’t.

That's why fit is so important. Coby and WCJ have such low IQ and they hunt for their own shots. I expect PaW to really blossom with vet starters now. He will have the least defensive pressure and receive the most assists IMO. Teams will eventually adjust and make him pass it and not just dunk it or shoot the corner 3 and then we will see how he adjusts.

Duck, when you getting your PaW jersey? You are franchise all in.

Ha! I’ve never owned a specific player jersey. I just buy team gear.

I 90% agree.
The place where he's had the tools to be more aggressive from day 1 is as a finisher. He has strength, (some) bounce, hands big enough to palm the ball through contact. I realize that a better handle would open up more finishing opportunities, but I'd like to see him tear the rim off or draw fouls trying a good deal more than he has.

I hate making comparisons, but Jimmy Butler was pretty passive his first years in the league.

PWill was done a disservice being on the court with 2 other players who haven't learned to play yet. It is tough for a rook to succeed starting in the first place, generational talents excepted of course.
Donovan and AK keep taking about development. Pwill will actually have a chance to develop now playing more minutes with all vets. I think he will thrive.

Letting all the youngins together on the floor was a bad idea with the right purpose, or the other way around? Anyway all three of them will have a better chance to succeed with vets around them who can teach them how to play. Both Pat and Wendell played better against Toronto. Maybe Wendell is a bench player too, nothing wrong with that.Stratmaster wrote:PWill was done a disservice being on the court with 2 other players who haven't learned to play yet. I totally understand all the Boston fans with the "Tatum is only 19!" posts and why it became a meme on the GB. When you have a guy who has all the tools and is so young it is really easy to get excited.
I am in no rush. Most guys prime is between 26-32. If you think about it this way we aren't expecting to see Prime Patrick for another 7 years. Of course I think by 23 he will be a damn good player but just look at Zach. He just turned 26 this last week and is showing you what his prime can (and hopefully should continue to) look like.
We just need to have patience and continue to trust in the kid's work ethic.
We've already seen how much he changed between FSU and the Draft, as well as clips of him working out through the All-Star break when over half the league went to South Beach.
It is a pretty surefire bet that he is going to maximize his talents.
* I think the thing I am most interested in this offseason isn't who we draft or find in FA but who Patrick trains with.
I AM A BUSINESS MAN NOW
