I think it very telling that McCarthy set up an interview with the Bears so quickly after parting ways with Dallas and the Saints do not get an interview until next week.
I think the Bears are McCarthy top priority with the Saints as a fallback. Would not surprise me that we hear McCarthy cancel his interview with the Saints, later in the week.

It’s hard to see them being able to keep McCarthy on ice throughout the Superbowl, that’s for sure. If McCarthy has an appealing option out there. Not sure if the Saints are in that category. Jeff Hughes believes the Bears have Ben Johnson as their first choice still. Keep hope alive I guess. You would think though that if the Bears have McCarthy as 1A, it’s going to be hard for the Bears to let him out of the building today without a job lined up. McCarthy is going to pressure them. And really, if they are most concerned about getting Caleb into a stable program, that’s tough to hold out for just a ‘maybe’ in Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson’s agent needs to clearly let the Bears know what’s up. I’m sure the BJ team will ask for the Bears to be clear on the money up front in return. Which for the Bears is a difficult ask.

I think the McCarthy interview today (and what happens in the next few days) will tell a ton with regards to where the Bears are in this process. If they press hard to nail down McCarthy, it would mean that they aren’t at all confident in landing Johnson.
If they do try to keep McCarthy on ice, to me that would be an indication that they know they have a strong chance of landing Johnson or one of the other candidates that are still coaching (Johnson, Kingsbury or Brady).
I also believe that guys like Carroll, Brown and anyone else that’s open for business right now are likely out of the running. If the Bears were serious about these guys, I’d think that we’d be hearing about second phase interviews by now. So for me, it feels like it’ll be McCarthy or somebody that’s still coaching. I guess that’s the summation of things from where I sit.

I’m glad to see Ben Johnson is the favorite. I would have liked Vrabel as well.

Those odds are slimming down though. Sounds like the odds makers are charging towards McCarthy…and for good reason.
I was actually cool with Vrabel going to NE. I just wasn’t as high on him as a lot of people were.

So yes, the line was bad.
Unless the Chiefs put the franchise tag on him the Bears should go all out to sign Trey Smith. Pro Bowl caliber and still pretty young. Then Draft LT in Round 1 and a Center and an EDGE in Round 2. Kelvin Banks and Jake Majors from Texas, And maybe look at Shemar Stewart from Texas A&M for EDGE with one of the two 2nd Round picks.
I agree, but I'm just curious. Why do you capitalize all the letters in EDGE? It's not an acronym for something, is it?
Just copy catting what I see on Draft websites. I didn't invent it. I capitalize all the positions I guess. RB, LB, LT, C, S, CB, EDGE, etc.

I think we'll pretty quickly see how much the Bears are all-in on Johnson (or not) depending on how things play out with McCarthy (and maybe Carroll?) this week.

The sooner the Lions lose the better. Lets hope they lose 49-50.

Total Bears thing is to panic and hire McCarthy now instead of waiting on Ben Johnson.

It’s funny because it’s clearly understandable why one would capitalize QB, RB, CB etc. You would think that an Edge would just be capitalized as ER since Edge Rusher has evolved into its own separate role independent of a general OLB or DE. But I guess the traditionalists prefer to keep it simple.

Who gets the bigger/better contract when hired, Ben Johnson or M McCarthy ?
Current (2024) annual pay of some coaches and where they rank:
1 - Reid $20 mil
3 - Jim Harbaugh $16 mil
8/9- Campbell and McDermott $11 mil
13/14 - Quinn and Z Taylor $4.5 mil
15/16 - R Morris and McCarthy $4 mil
**numbers from 'frontofficesports'; new hires in bold

I think McCarthy gets north of 12M a year. Johnson probably gets 8-10 is my guess??

Wow, do we think the Bears are going to pay that for McCarthy? They're on the hook for Eberflus contract for a couple more years too right?

I’d sincerely hope that they’re ready to pony up if they want a viable HC. If they don’t, teams like the Raiders, Jets and even the Jags almost certainly will.

Re: Bears 10.0: GM and coach watch before the draft
I don't hate McCarthy as much as a lot of Bears fans do, and I'm not as infatuated with Johnson as it seems like the fanbase is as a whole. My preferred candidate is Kingsbury, whom I think is Ben Johnson with tons and tons more experience. McCarthy might be okay, he certainly has experience dealing with dysfunctional ownership, and he's an offensive oriented coach that has done a lot of QB work, so that I think that's the type of guy we want.
I think sometimes people get overly excited about the results and think Dallas wasn't so great so McCarthy stinks, and I'm not sure that's fair. I don't look at Dallas and go "wow they should be awesome" particularly with their injuries.

Florio; ‘To even remotely have a shot at Ben Johnson, the Bears need to clear out the front office’ (as the Raiders have)

I put that right next to the media crap that Caleb Williams doesn't want to be drafted by the Bears unless he gets a part ownership stake.

I've soured on Florio a lot. He's extremely hyperbolic and very seldomly do things play out the way he says they will.
I still like him, I just don't really pay attention to his reporting as much
