Its hard to say when he should start, but this is a .500 team at best. Its not like there is a risk to starting him ASAP. People are like, well it depends how the Bears are doing. It doesn’t. As long as the line is OK and and he looks like he can handle it, week 1 is fine. They arent missing out on a glorious Dalton lead season guys.

This is a .500 team WITHOUT him. But I agree with "as long as he looks like he can handle it" - if he comes into camp and blows em away, let's roll. There's enough support at WR, TE, RB and the OLine that we're not at risk for ruining this kid.
If he needs some time, let him sit behind Dalton and we'll wait patiently. Nagy has done a good job with ready rookies IMO - Montgomery got his spot pretty quickly, Mooney was a factor week 1, they brought Kmet along slowly (TEs adapt to the NFL slower than most positions) but by the end of the year he was TE1.

I always thought it was weird to think about “ruining” quarterbacks in rookie seasons. Good QBs learn on the job, ask Manning and Aikman. And freshman QBs do play on big programs and not a problem of being ruined out of highschool. If guys have bad careers they don’t have the juice, not because they play early. Anyway, I’m a little worried about the kid getting hit with Ifedi and Jenkins. But a mobile QB is what you want in this situation. And Mustipher will get everybody in the right calls.

Cutler was ruined here vs how he was brought up in Denver (bad O-Line, bad WRs most of the years, multiple OCs)
Darnold was ruined in NYJ (Wilson probably will be too)
RG3 was thrown out there and asked to rely too much on his athleticism and played injured until the wheels fell off
Give a rookie QB a bad line, no running game, no legit WRs and a bad offensive coach and they'll most likely fail.
Give em a good line, good running game, good WRs and a stable offensive head coach and there's much better chance that they'll do well.
Juice matters but so does situation.

They’ll fail. But permanent damage is unlikely. There are too many examples of that not happening. Let Fields fail and learn, it is not a problem.

Whats crazy, is successful quarterbacks are probably the hardest position to find in all of sports. Every year there is a whole new influx of talent, and only 32 starting jobs are available, with many of those jobs held onto for years. Almost all drafted will fail.
Its amazing how difficult this position is to fill. You would think with just the USA having a population of 328.2 million, and 49.2% being Males, you could find 32 people who are capable of filling the position at a high level.

If he is anything like he seems like he is, that locker room will palpably want him starting right away, which if smart, the Bears won’t ignore. Big ‘If’.

There could be 100 billion people and it wouldn't make it easier, because it's really only how good the top 32 are compared to each other. Whomever the 20th best guy is would be an absolute elite super stud QB if there were 300 teams like in the NCAA but is lousy in the NFL.
It is the one position where you can't build a unit and have strength in depth, just absolute top line talent is all that matters, and that makes it tough to fill regardless of the pipeline.

The issue is the worst quarterback in the NFL is at a high level.

And it's by far most important position in sport. Maybe even most important accross all sports. You are nothing and no one in NFL without top quarterback. You have absolute zero chance to succeed without one. You can build amazing team accross all other positions but you get Trubisky at QB you are default 0.500 team.

I mean, we did go 12-4 with Trubisky, Eli Manning won 2 Superbowls, and Joe Flacco, Nick Foles, Trent Dilfer, and Brad Johnson won a Superbowl.

They're gushing over him.
He's elite from the pocket but has big time size and speed. This feels bigger than Derrick.

I’ve been think the last time a Chicago sports team had a super star rookie... I though Kerry Wood and his big strikeout game.
You’re right though, it was Rose.
After all we have endured with Rodgers and Favre it will be very sweet if Fields is who he seems to be.

The real issue is that there it's like a pyramid- you can have a zillion guys at the bottom, but at each level they progress, they get culled out. There are only X number of high schools, which feed something like x/100 colleges, and your QB has to come from one of about 50 colleges. So each year there are really only 50 viable targets, and except for the outliers, like your occassional QB from a place like North Dakota State, there are probably only about 25 or so colleges that will produce the majority of NFL QB's. And of those 25, maybe 10 will have a QB with NFL potential in any given year. So you're really looking at about 10 guys to fill the needed slots.

I sure hopes Dazz is another Mooney like steal!!!
Somehow, I think if the positions were reversed, Fields would still do better in the nfl than Trubisky ever would.
