all tampering should be a-ok. stop the charade

somebody please tell me why this rule exists. what team has ever legitimately lost out on a guy because the signing team was tampering? if a player and his agent are quick to strike a deal with a tampering team without waiting to hear out a team that is playing by the rules, they are only screwing themselves

I think all tampering related to impending FAs after the season is over should be allowed.

Tampering with players under contract such as the Clippers stalking Kawhi in Toronto during the season or the Lakers convincing AD to demand a trade just to the Lakers is harmful. The problem is I don't know that they have ever enforced tampering rules around something that actually mattered. 100% of the fines were stupid **** that doesn't hurt anyone. A coach/owner innocuously answering a question (like Lacob getting fined 50k for saying he's not interested in Ben Simmons or Draymond Green in a commentator role commenting on Devin Booker needing to get out if they don't get him more talent).

You aren't going to do anything when AD and LeBron sit down with Westbrook and convince him to come to the Lakers though even when he is under contract with Washington? Probably didn't matter because Washington wasn't trying to keep him, but that's actually inducing a player away from his current contractual obligations and if Washington was all in on Westbrook would have caused them real harm.

Agreed. It's a sham now that agents are so prominent and in control of everything. The idea that this rule exists when the entire job of an agent is to do exactly this, go out and talk to teams, is ridiculous.

The NBA has been progressive on many areas, it's weird to see them stick their heads in the sand on this issue and pretend that agents do not exist in the NBA world.

So what are the odds we get a verdict tomorrow morning? Seems like it'd be good to have this settled before the games start...

It going on longer doesn’t reall effect anything, as it looks like we are going to try this team out as is. Obviously as mid season trades start happening you want to know your position but not knowing right now doesn’t really impact anything they are doing at the moment imho. Obviously I think all parties would like to have this done sooner rather than later.

I don't think it has to come today. The investigation's going to go on until they're done.

If the NBA ignores their golden boy but comes after the Bulls....they are really just openly shameful.

Somebody wake Silver up and tell him nothing happened in Chicago that wasn't happening everywhere else and put this to an end.

The reason they still "investigating" is they cant prove anything. Many teams were already operating with hide your evidence after Bucks and Bogdanovic fiasco.

I'm slightly surprised at how many posters are basically fine with tampering. It deeply sickens me and I want the NBA to make major moves to reduce or eliminate it. Starting with next year lol.

I hate tampering but any penalty will be a one time type of thing like when they chose to warn us of all teams for tanking in 2017.

Because the whole idea of enforcing tampering is a farce, and simply can't be enforced. If the league truly wants to eliminate tampering, the league basically has to be okay with tracking every device by all team employees, including players, as well as their agents and that is simply not going to happen.

My opinion is that the league has found evidence of tampering, however, they simply don't want to rule on it because they know the majority of the other teams do the exact same thing. They can't go with the notion that they penalized just the Bulls because the trade was announced a minute after the action start of free agency, when it's likely that other teams have had their trades finalized before even the Bulls finalized theirs, but they just didn't announce it publicly - it would just make the league look like a joke.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Bulls are pushing back on the league, saying if you're going to punish us, you have to punish, x, y, and z team just the same, even though their moves were finalized several minutes or hours afterwards. Not sure if that's a Pandora's box the league wants to open up.
Why so serious?

I feel like player tampering is the problem. Sure, teams should keep things fair, but the multi-allstar groups wanting to play together, while understandable, undermines league fairness.

Probably the best place to effect change is with the agents. How about barring any agent whose client is proven to be influenced by tampering from having any NBA clients for 2 years?

It depends on the tampering.

Tampering with impending FAs because the official negotiation period starts on July 1st, but from a practical perspective they are no longer under contract with their team because the season is over is a farce and should be gotten rid of.

Tampering by execs or players answering innocuous questions on the air or to the media about players on other teams should be removed as a problem because it is also a farce. At a minimum, the comment should have to be viewed as actively inducing or repetitive.

The actual only tampering that is really harmful are players or execs convincing other players to demand out of contracts that are in force and even worse demanding a trade to a specific team (Harden to Brooklyn as an example, Kawhi being wooed during the season by the Clippers as another, LeBron/Davis as another).

None of the fines for tampering have ever been for tampering that actually ever made a difference.
