It sure would be nice to win at least one series. Would make their post all-star break collapse a bit more palatable, and show the team has some fight and some heart after all. Would be nice if Tucker showed up- he's 1/7 in the series with no RBI's.

Kind of a weird format- Cubs get all 3 games at Wrigley?

that call against Bogaerts is the dumbest thing I've ever seen...like that pitch is a foot off the plate and the game should be tied on two sacrifices.

Great series win. Defense was unreal.

Wonder what the crowds will look like in Milwaukee.

Why they had a better record?

Win more games

Typically it's 2 games for the better team, one game for the other, isn't it?

No that has not been the case for any of the wild card series.

The team with the better record host the wild card round.

There are no days off.

Honestly, i don't feel its worth discussing here. I shouldn't have even posted.

Someone else might chime in, and that's cool. I dont desire participating in the convo.

I saw a freeze frame of the pitch in question and no it was not "a foot off the plate". In fact, to me, it look like a textbook strike. To me, it was knee high and on the corner. Padres are simply overreacting.

My question is: why wasn't Xander protecting the plate with 2 strikes? That pitch was too close to be taken, and it burned him.

And even if they did catch a break (they did), what about the play at the plate that turned a run into an out? When they showed a close up of the replay, it was pretty clear to me that he beat the tag by a centimeter. But because the call was out, it was too close to overturn it.

I also hate when PCA got called out on a technicality. Imo if you beat the tag, your safe and play ends there.

It wasn't close lol. Bogaerts even in a down year is one of the best in MLB at not chasing pitches/striking out. The guy has an elite command of the strike zone. He knows when to 'protect' and when it's an obvious ball 4. The strike 2 call was also a ball but was closer. The umpire hadn't been calling strikes there, his zone changed in the 9th inning. I hate the idea of ABS, but this is exactly why they're going to institute it. These two missed calls completely changed the outcome of an elimination playoff game. I don't know how you can call it a "textbook strike" so confidently, it simply wasn't.

But, like, the Padres have major holes on both sides and they were exposed in this 3 game series. Can't blame their listless offense/starting Darvish for some reason on the umpire. They should've scored more than one run, but if the game proceeded in exactly the same way if Bogaerts had walked, Cronenworth's tapper is scoring a run and that deep flyout is scoring another run. It's at least going to the bottom of the ninth. It's an objectively bad way for a playoff game to end due to poor officiating. Refball at its finest.

I think the Brewers have major holes as well to expose, the team I'm rooting for to win the WS, of course the Cubs forgot how to hit the ball and are getting rekt at this very moment. The Cubs could be the team to beat if they hit like they did in the first half. Anything can happen. I'm not a Cubs fan, but I think it would be good for the City if they won it all. I'm not gonna root for them though unless they get to the WS. Brewers win is better for baseball and the Midwest.

Boyd couldn't make it out of the second, despite Cubs getting him a run in the first. So much for taking the opener.

This is where not having any frontline starting pitching catches up to you

I kind of expected the Brewers were going to put up a crooked number in the first game. The Cubs starting pitching is depleted. They just came of a 3 game playoff series with no off days and had to play a fully rested Brewers team in under 48 hours. The only question was could the Cubs bats show up and make it a game.

Of course, I didn't expect it would be 9 runs out f the gate. It's 1 loss though, and 1 I expected. Let's see what game 2 has to offer.
