Then leak news that the Bulls and Melo have agreed in principle on a contract starting at some relatively modest amount prior to the end of the moratorium since no official terms can be agreed upon during that period anyway. Then Phil will have one more reason to believe it's real and he needs to get in front of it.

Could the Melo attorney things just be a formality? Maybe just doing his due diligence or something

Anyway, word is, in the office, Melo's attorney's are heading into Chicago tomorrow. That is all I got.

So I didn't want to be just another Rando with a Source, but my Father and I have relationships with two Sr. Partners at Seyfarth Shaw LLP HQ'd in Chicago: One of the partners called me earlier this afternoon (b/c he knows how closely I'm following the Melo situation) and the other partner confirmed via text that Carmelo's Attorneys will definitely be in Chicago by tomorrow mid-morning.

NOTE: I've been a heavy-lurker throughout this Melo process, and wanted to take a moment to thank you all for helping me through this roller coaster of a week. My process has been: 1) Read latest breaking story from (insert that hack ESPN/Yahoo "Insider") 2) Dial into 4-way conference-call with my Bro's to discuss the legitimacy/effect of said latest news 3) Come here to read through latest 8-10 pages of latest Melo Thread 4) Re-calibrate my thoughts on whether we land Melo.

Right now, I am very confident Melo will be a Bull.

Do law partners really give out confidential information like this? I just chatted with a lawyer friend about this post, and he was very dubious, FWIW.

Nope.

1. Official salary cap isn't released until the moratorium ends

2. Bulls don't even have an the final $ yet to know how much they could offer him as an outright free agent. They'd have to make several moves first before they'll know.

Melo's lawyers aren't here to negotiate a trade with the Knicks, they'd be here for whatever reasons Anthony needs his lawyers. My assumption is that he wants to stop paying NY income tax ASAP if he is in fact leaving NY.

Unless Melo just wants to take them to Hot Dog's before they close, there's no reason for them to be here any sooner than mid-week, at the earliest.

Once again, Bulls don't even know how much cap space they'd have to spend so there wont be any negotiations going on any time soon.

There are literally dozens of reasons Anthony's lawyers can come to Chicago tomorrow. I have no idea what it means (since I'm not his lawyer and wouldn't risk getting de-barred by talking about it here) but you simply saying that Anthony's lawyers aren't coming is stupid. If Anthony said "I'm going to be Chicago someway starting next week" maybe you think his lawyers wouldn't wait a week to start doing ****? how many companies does he own in NY? How many businesses? How many properties does he own? Does he have a property he wants to buy here? There are **** dozens upon dozens reasons to have your lawyers in a city like Chicago.

Just sayin, with all the wives/Lala talk, Jeannie would be a bigger factor in that regard. But I'm hoping for the leverage angle of course.

It's entirely possible that he's doing the same in other cities too.

Leon Rose is probably threatening Phil that if he doesn't do a S&T with the Bulls, Carmelo will go to the Lakers, who can sign him to a max contract without having to do a S&T.

So let him. Melo ends up the biggest loser in that threat

I'm not sure if I believe the whole lawyer thing. I really haven't heard anything about Melo heading to Chicago tomorrow. I have heard that the Bulls are the favorite to land him if he does leave NY.

Is the future location of lawyers from a law firm particularly confidential or sensitive information? But yeah, it seems like they'd be extra careful on the ethics of it given the circumstances.

Of course the attorneys are meeting in Chicago. It's halfway between LA and NY.

Eh. I'd say it is not likely that he takes the paperwork squad to every city. If true, this is huge.

Now, I'm like 60-40 that the Lakers are leverage to get NY to trade him and Chicago to pay him his max and not actual interest in the Lakers, but I don't know. I do remember the 2010 decision and all week no one talked about Miami then Miami is talked about a day before out of no where and then all of the sudden "talents...South Beach...not 6, not 7"

Let's hope.

"Sign-and-trade me to Chicago for assets or I walk to the Lakers and you get nothing."

This would explain how Melo, who met with the Knicks last on Thursday and was relatively comfortable with them, is all of a sudden strongly considering the team he met with for the shortest amount of time that has the weakest roster and no coach in a tough conference. They are the only ones who had the ability to offer a maximum salary immediately (even the Rockets haven't moved Lin yet) and thus would be a viable threat to the Knicks to force them to participate in a sign and trade. The third team to emerge always had to have max cap space even if he no intent of going there.
