for some reason my mind has always liked to compare JJ to Eddie Jones, however, Eddie was a better defender. If I remember correctly he got a big deal (when he was going to sign with us) then his play dropped dramatically in 2 years.

He had had his best year his contract year, and as I recall it was raised expectations, he not only didn't improve from his career year, but went back to being fairly good but not great.

So fans were disappointed, given the large contract. Pretty good player though, pretty solid for a good while.

Yeah, but numbers at the beginning of his career with the Lakers were still very comparable to the numbers near the end in Miami. Jones prime ended up being from that season in Charlotte after the trade from LA at age 27 to his 4th season in Miami at 32.

Johnson turns 29 this month. So if we put Jones trend to his, he'd still be at least an above-average NBA player for more than half of his deal. Probably fall off completely in the last year or in a stretch before it.

The part of the deal that I'm not ok with is throwing Taj in, just so we can overpay JJ.

JJ is about to become Michael Finley when he got his last big contract.

Logged a crap load of minutes for years and was the hard working face of a turn around (Finley was definitely better in his prime). Big for a SG and a hard working defender. Very solid scorer but not elite and not great at creating shots.

Finley fell completely off once age and minutes caught up to his legs. Unlike Cuban, the Bulls won't have the luxury of the one time buy out to get him off the roster when he still had 4 years or so left on his contract. Once he's here on a long term contract, he ain't leaving.

You may also recall Eddie believing that he would HAVE to sign with us because we were the only team with max room. That caused him to cry. Literally, I remember him talking about how he was crying with his mom because no one else could pay him, and we sucked. And then Miami swept in with a sign-and-trade, releasing him from bondage.

JJ at or near the max would be a massive mistake.. This team must have 2 priorities this offseason :
1/ Lebron
2/ The scoring big man (Bosh, Amare, Boozer)

The rest is filling up type of recruitment (good wing defenders and 3pt shooters). You don't want to bet everything on Lebrong and come empty handed, but a pass at Lebron is something you can't say no to.

If no Lebron, the massive priority is low post presence.. JJ is not even on the list because too expensive for a perimeter oriented player..
