Very True, i dont think it depends on a guarantee from Lebron. 30 million over 6 years where it would take him 12 years to make that in MSU makes no sense for him to turn down.

This now becomes a game of will he or won't he accept the offer. If Izzo declines, the only hope of LeBron returning is if the Cavs can get PJax. I don't see any other coach that would impress LBJ.

Indeed. WTF does Tom Izzo do for Lebron James? Lebron is not some wide-eyed 16 year old from Muskegon, Michigan who gets chills when "Coach Iz" steps in his living room to recruit him while mommy serves up tea and vanilla wafers. THIS IS LEBRON DAMN JAMES! Hire Phil Jackson, and that might impress Lebron. Tom Izzo has done zilch at the NBA level, and Lebron knows that. And as good as Izzo MIGHT be, he can't make that Cavs bunch win a title just by his sheer presence. He has no magic plays to make Mo Williams and JJ Hickson good enough to complement Lebron on a championship team.

Gilbert is getting desperate.

Izzo is a great, great basketball coach. He could easily translate to the NBA game.

what are the other top coaches paid? if this is an over-the-top offer rather than merely generous it may indeed be a desperation move

April - 2010 the average coaches salary is estimated at 3.4 million per - down 10% from the previous year.

Thib got a better than average deal per (albeit only two years guaranteed). Izzo would be at approx 6th at 5 million per (Behind Jackson, L Brown, M Dan Tony, D Nelson, and Doc Rivers)

are you serious? i think it'd have to hurt the cavs chances of keeping lebron. how much i don't know

If it takes The Wizard of Iz 12 years to make $30M at MSU and he's made it in 6 in Cleveland ...then if I'm Jerry I find a way to get $15M in a brown paper bag to the Iz for him NOT to accept the deal . To tell Dan Gilbert thanks but no thanks

If it is a two horse race between Cleveland and ourselves and if Iz is seriously considering this - this would be the knock out punch

Highly unethical and probably illegal etc....but who gives a crap

Get it done

they're talking $6 mil per though, which at least puts him ahead of rivers. either way, i don't see it as an outrageous offer. seems they could realistically be offering him that even if it's not a lebron-centric hire

thanks for the article, btw

How about This Izzo stuff to the Cavs. If he's dumb enough to go without knowing if LeBron will return then he's too dumb to hire.

Can someone explain to me why Tom Izzo will convince LBJ as a coach he shouldn't leave? Phil Jackson, can see that. But Izzo, for all his college success, is still a wildly unknown NBA style coach and LBJ is all about the titles.

I think the Cavs have moved on and the are starting to rebuild with Izzo as their man.

They will clean house and start over in the draft.

What?! That's crazy.

If the Cavs have "moved on" and don't think LeBron will re-sign, then there is no way an owner goes out and spends $6 Mil a year on a coach for a rebuilding period.

If the Cavs were really moving on, you would hear that the team is interviewing the likes of Kelvin Sampson or Mark Jackson, and the salary offered would be near the minimum for a rookie coach.

Agreed. No way would they spend that kind of money if they intended to "move on."

Tom Izzo will take the offer, with or without LBJ. This is just bs posturing. 30 mil is a lot of money for an overrated college bum like him.

He will sacrifice his college legend for 30 mil in order to be fired in 3 years. Afterward, he can come back to Michigan State to make 2 mil/year.

LBJ does not give a damn about a college bum like Izzo. Let's not overspeculate things here. I see this as a desperate move by Gilbert in hope of keeping LBJ. No coach in the NBA and college rank will command respect from LBJ with the exception of Doc River, Phil Jackson, Popovich, and maybe Thibodeau.

If you want to win, it starts with a good roster not with an unproven NBA coach.
