Hard disagree. Competent shooter. Decent ball handler. His comp coming out was JR Smith. I believe that's his ceiling. His bball IQ is exceedingly low. His defense is non-existent. He's an ideal bum slaying 6th or 7th man microwave. I don't believe athleticism translates into potential. But as Coldfish wrote, we all see something different in Lavine.

Don't you think IQ can be coached up? Fred has to get Zach to play more of a team game, and humble him a little bit by treating him like just one of the young players that needs to be coached, instead of like an entitled star.

1) thibs couldn't coach him up
2) paying a guy a lot of money based on potential rather than production is a pretty good way to make him feel entitled

J.R. Smith btw, has a ring. And for the longest time Bulls fans were tossing his name about with the likes of O.J. Mayo and Arron Afflalo to be our starting 2 guard for those D.Rose era Thibs teams.

so we shouldn't be that concerned about overpaying a guy because we might succeed despite it?

j.r. cost the cavs a lot in luxury tax, btw. do you see the bulls paying tax in an attempt to cover up a mistake?

4 teams paid the tax this past season. JR has said in the past that he would only do so for a top 4 team (and the tax has become much more punitive in the meantime). paying zach lavine a lot of money is highly unlikely to help the bulls become a top 4 team

People need to remember that next season the cap will be jumping to 109M which gives us the option to add a big star FA. Also if Dunn, Lauri and Lavine all have break out seasons then we might just need to add one big FA instead of two. If Carter and Hutchison have big rookie years then we could be in a way better position.

Lavine is the current Bulls Rorschach test. People are definitely seeing different things here.

IMO, Lavine just isn't that good. Like, I would prefer that he isn't signed at all level. I hope he sticks to his guns and asks for like 5/130 or something and he takes the QO.

I won't be mad if he extends, but I'd rather he do a 1 year deal as well.

It may seem like a small thing, but, I don't hear anybody arguing that the TEAM will be better with him next year. I just keep hearing "he" will better next year, and that's the dynamic that scares me. I mean it is COMPLETELY about Zach - ENTIRELY.

You would think that no one else on our roster had value.

The only teams that seem to ever even have been rumoured to be willing to make a run at Zach were Sacramento and Atlanta. Had Atlanta made an offer, I'd have been forced to think about matching. They're in the same conference, and they have plenty of playing time to give him. I don't know if he's a 'winner' per se, but, there is the remote possibilty that he may aggravate some of the fans, and be part of a woulda/coulda/shoulda discussion that lasts the next 10 year. (I said remote.)

On the other hand, had that team been Sacramento? No way I match anything. They have a bunch of "can't miss" headline acts, and where is it getting them? It's crabs in a bucket over there in an already stacked West.

This franchise, even if unfairly, has already been WARNED by the league about appearing to be tanking.

I don't think 'just tank' is an option, and with the 7th pick being about the highest the Bulls will be picking any time soon, it is more important than ever that they add pieces that fit, rather than going all in on an injured, selfish hot-shot.

I mean, how do you 'build around' someone who is just going to go to the hole anyway?

I don't think anybody disputes that that's just the kind of player even Michael Jordan was; but, even he didn't succeed until a #5 pick (Scottie Pippen) prevented teams from just double-teaming him.

Where's that #5 pick going to come from this time? Never mind the name of the person it would be used on. I said myself that that's an unrealistic demand or expectation. The question is where the materials to 'build around' Zach are supposed to come from?

I mean, are we talking about cashing in Lauri Markkanen for some Edward Scissor-Hands rebounder just so they can give the ball to Zach? He can't play a two-man game with Markkanen now!

And everybody's talking about "HE" (Lavine) will get better?

This is not the Zach show.

It seems like the whole point of people wanting to lock Zach down is so that the rest of the team can be gutted to support him and only him, and, aside from being nowhere near having proved himself that good a player, even if he was, in a league that has become an escalating arms race, even for the biggest stars in the league, what would you put around him that he hasn't already shown himself unwilling to work with now?

A 3&D wing? Admittedly, we don't have that, but, if we did, how other than being perceived as taking shots away from Zach?

Everything seems to be about 'How can we make Zach look worth the money'?

The answer? Pay him first, and then we'lll take him to the Maybelline counter for some final touches, in that order.

Many people are complaining about it specifically because of your parentheses statement there. It’s a huge if, given that he’s been a poor player every season of his career so far. It took an incredibly high scoring efficiency to make him only somewhat negative in his third year. He’s unlikely to improve much there, and he’s shown no improvement anywhere else in four years.

I want to retain Lavine for a 1+1 deal cause I still think he has serious potential, but, I honestly believe he's the Bulls 4th most talented player after Lauri, Carter and Dunn.

A couple of sites nba draft and bleacher report gave him a Russel Westbrook comparison...he was a lottery pick that was not a starter nba scouts seem to think he has a lot of potential
