I watched the full FSU vs UNC game that's floating around YouTube, and focused exclusively on Patrick Williams. Here are some random rambling thoughts, from a non-expert.
1. The first thing that stands out is the size of Williams... He's huge.
2. Regarding athleticism, here is my take: physical size is obviously again elite, as his frame has room to grow. Hands seem massive and strong. His top end to end speed in a straight line looks solid for a wing, and his vertical leap looks great off two feet. I don't remember seeing any obvious one foot jumps. Very coordinated but not the most fluid athlete we've seen at his size.
His defensive stance is excellent, and he shuffles his feet very well, which allows him to move laterally plenty quick enough. Does have seemingly heavy feet, which means he's slow to change directions. His hips may also hinder him here, as they seem stiff. Acceleration seems good at times, and labored at other times, so this was confusing. Not that great at changing directions, and yet he didn't seem to need to very often. I couldn't gauge his center of gravity too well, but he really got low in his stance.
3. For most of the game, Williams appears visually slow and lumbering. Despite this, he rarely was beat laterally all game. Always seems just as athletic as he needs to be.
4. Occasionally his reaction times and athleticism were just breath taking, generally in help defense. He doesn't rely on his athleticism but seems to tap into it whenever he needs to, similar to WCJ.
5. Defensively, FSU had Williams press the ball at 3/4 court, and he only guarded the perimeter in this game. He switched basically everything, so it was hard to assess PnR defense, but his man to man defense seemed fine to me and help defensive instincts seem to be off the charts. He has clearly been coached well, as his stance and fundamentals are extremely solid.
I couldn't really assess his interior defense, given that he was only on the perimeter.
6. If Williams plays defense like this in every game, I can understand why his rebounding numbers might be low - he just wasn't around the paint at all on defense. He did show great instincts on the offensive glass though. Poorly timed jumps on 1 or 2 rebounds. Does seem to box out guys pretty well.
7. Offensively, Williams was definitely not a focal piece. His shot release looks a little slow, but form is solid without a hitch. He nailed two catch and shoot threes that I saw, and a smooth off the dribble jumper. He hangs around the perimeter mostly, and takes opportune cuts. I didn't see much dribbling but he appears very comfortable handling the ball. Makes very quick offensive reads when he needs to. Solid free throw form.
Overall, the one thing I was most struck by was the few times when Williams really did turn on the jets and tap into some of his athleticism. His body just gobbles up space on the court, and he seems to get every where he needs to, and as quickly as he needs to. His reaction times on help defense also seemed special on 1 or 2 plays. If this is the sort of athlete he is - that is to say, a highly functional one - then I can easily see why he may have jumped up draft boards with more intense work outs.
I think give his ability to protect the rim from the weak side, I'd like to have him as a 4 next to WCJ. Our defensive IQ as a team and rim protection would be excellent and we'd be highly switchable. With that said, on switches (and FSU switched everything), Williams looks completely comfortable, and his body is so wide that it takes some of the little guys an extra half step to get around. Notably, Cole Anthony never actually beat Williams off the dribble. He can certainly hold his own I think as a 3, though my personal feeling is that he is more of a 4. Either way, it's hard to imagine him being a defensive liability at either position based on what I've seen so far.
Offensively his position seems to be that of a true wing, since he mostly hung around the perimeter. He spaced the floor, but not a high volume shooter. Not a movement shooter like JJ Reddick, needs a half second to get set and then shoot. Off the dribble game is extremely raw, but I was encouraged by the comfort with his handle. He also moves the ball quickly, and doesn't seem to think the game slowly, ala Lavine or Kris Dunn.
Williams' athleticism is certainly a swing skill for me - if there is more to his athletic reserve than meets the eye, then he should have a high ceiling. Otherwise, I am quite comfortable with a high floor as well. I didn't scout or watch film on any of the other players, so I don't have any regrets of missing out on any one, and I'm willing to trust AKME for at least this one year. I'm sure the trade down possibilities just weren't there for them to be sure they'd get their guy - if they were, then a trade obviously would have happened. So though Williams was a slight reach at 4, I'm okay with it to draft the BPA on our draft board.
I'm excited to see more in a few short weeks!
