And if Capela couldn't stay on the floor in the playoffs, then god help Wendell Carter.

Capella is better on the perimeter but he was pretty much where Carter is now coming into the league.
Its not all athleticism. Its IQ. Carter has IQ in spades. Capella is pretty good there on D though too.

I hope Carter turns out great.
I still say our opening day starter is Lopez with Portis backing him up.
Sad.
Not sure who is our SF.

It's Hutch. He should be. Holiday deserves his bench role.

Capela and Carter is a weird comparison. Capela doesn't have much of a skillset offensively and largely eats off Harden and Paul's defensive attention. Defensively, he's lighter, a quicker leaper and moves better laterally.
Carter is a more rounded player, but Capela is probably better defensively.

Again... Its not every team. Its the Dubs.
IMO If Capella could shoot he would have stayed on the floor. Because he can't he didn't. Carter can and in time will IMO.
Don't get me wrong. I still would have picked a wing at 7. I would have gone with Mikal Bridges because the 2-4 wing is the most important position in the game right now. Mikal Hutch would have been a good draft.
I still think Carter has value and considerable upside due to his IQ and skill package. If we can move Portis for a good 3/4 then I'd be even more excited about Carter.

Why are you so focused on the west?... On teams in a window we aren't even prepared to sniff.

1. Carter is 19... he will get better and he has the body, athletcism, and skills to do that
2. He can shoot. Immediately he makes the floor spaced much better for Lauri and our guards.
3. He is our best big defender from day one. He makes Portis and Lauri better right away.
I wanted Luka or JJJ. I think Carter will be better overall than Ayton, Bagley, and Bamba. I think he will be better than Horford. My issue is that he cannibalizes Lauri's impact.
I think as things progress WCJ plays 32mpg at C and Lauri the other 16. Lauri plays 20mpg at PF and we trade Bobby for a small ball wing PF that plays the other 28mpg at PF.
I see Portis gone in a trade for a very important piece. Just like you do.
Portis + Lopez + Asik is basically 26 Milllion in expiring contracts and a young PF/C who is rotation worthy.

POR would be a good trading partner. CJ and a SF for Lavine, Portis, and Expirings

This. Some of the Carter takes in this thread are laughably hyperbolic. Carter isn't nearly as bad an athlete as some here want you to believe. He is in fact a good athlete - he just isn't 'elite'.
I think this was a good pick and Carter is an excellent fit next to Lauri. The idea that this somehow insures the Bulls a decade of mediocrity is ridiculous. The draft is nothing but a crapshoot and Carter has as much a chance to break out as anyone.

Hyperbole but ok
Wow. I didn’t know he could jump like that.

I'm responding to a direct comment about Capela not being able to stay on the floor in the playoffs.

Every Duke fan I've heard talk about him says the same. Not good in space.
After a season of attempted tanking, the Bulls got a big whose defensive game fits several decades ago but not now. Fantastic.
WCJ has a nice all around game, pretty decent athlete, but he's nowhere near as quick as Horford on both sides of the ball. Still hopeful he improves, especially defensively.
Yeah of course we all want him to do well, but he scares me. His upside is being a solid player and his downside is being a liability defensively. Just an awful payoff for a year of attempted tanking IMO.

The NBA is completely different now. Big men dont play big anymore. Which is why when someone actually decides to do it ( like Draymond, Tristan Thompson etc) even if they are undersized, its effective.
Grit, Strength, Lower Body position, Core strength, Agility, Basketball IQ, Court vision, Spatial awareness and just basic, unrelenting determination is what makes a truly good big man.
Wendell Carter has so many of those attributes. And very few Centers in today's league have the same. Maybe they have a couple of inches on him. Sure, but I don't think that's going o cause the mismatches that folks are concerned about.
Great post. I would add wingspan to the list. And Wendell’s wingspan, at 7’ 4.5” is quite good.

What? Capella is a damn gazelle out there.
Who didn't play in the 4th quarters of the playoffs. Capella is also in year 4. He wasn't much as a rookie. Carter is way ahead of him right now.
I think if Bagley had stayed in HS and not reclassified that Carter would have BOOMED at Duke and he would have gone 1 or 2.
Is it also possible Capela got pulled in 4th quarters of playoff games because he shoots 56% from the line?

Versatile switching teams aren't some fad. This is teams figuring out through analytics that it's simply better basketball.
You might as well say that some day all this wacky three point shooting is going to go away.
It’s likely that having versatile bigs who can play inside and outside is not inconsistent with the modern game.
You can take the last example of team success and suggest history stops there, the only thing left to do is copy. Or you can keep evolving the game.

Yes and he doesn't space the floor.

...but then drawing Wendell Carter in it?
Let's worry about contending in the central division first, then the Eastern Conference.. THEN the west.
My basic point is, Mr. Wendell is gonna be fine and he's not gonna have to worry about GS & Houston switches for a while..If ever.
He's gonna have to worry more about containing Embiid, Bamba, and Ayton.. Because once Centers come back in vogue, we have an answer.

Yes and he doesn't space the floor.
I really don't think you need your center to shoot 3's. I'd frankly prefer they be like Capela (or Bagley) and threaten the space inside the arc offensively. If you've got the playmakers such a player can be deadly.
