Re: Matas Progress Tracker
Matas basically has no chance to win ROY.
Its too late even if he goes crazy. When you figure he isnt even on the rookie radar yet from NBA.com he basically has no chance. There is plenty to blame for that but that is out of Matas control.
But you figure at some point he will pop on the list, so the real question is how high can he climb?
Basically there are a bunch of players hovering around the same season stats. There honestly all pretty basic, so if Matas can string some big games together, it will be enough to make some separation just by recency bias.
Here is my top 12 (outisde of Matas) I think will be competing for both rookie teams.
Risacher
Sarr
Castle
Edey
Clinghan
Carrington
Ware
Knecht
Da Silva
Missi
Wells
Collier
I think Castle, Risacher, Sarr, Edey, Wells, Missi are highly favored to be first team at this stage. That probably wont change given the overall season numbers.
So the question is, can Matas make the second team? I think he can.
He would be competing with
Clingan
Carrington
Ware
Knecht
Da Silva
Collier
So its highly possible if he keeps on the same path he can beat thee guys out.
Now just going by casuals, I think Ware and Knecht will make the second team. Just because of media markets.
So the guys on the bubble would be Matas, Carrington, Da Silva, Collier and Clingan for the last 3 spots.
My logic is, I think Matas, Clingan will make the most noise down the stretch. Matas because he finally is set free and Ayton is injured for Clingan. So those two are most likely to make the most down the stretch.
I think Carrington, Da Silva and Collier are decent, but their time and numbers will be sort of the same going forward. Da Silva might even get minutes taken from him once everyone is healthy.
So in short, I think he will make the all rookie 2nd team.

Yeah, I believe Castle has it in the bag at this point.
Buzelis would have to go nuclear to get it, hell he may not even make the all rookie 2nd team.
Castle is still overall at 12.9 ppg (42/28/73), 2.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists so wouldn't say he has it completely in the bag.
This rookie class has been as bad as advertised. The headliners Reed Sheppard, Alex Sarr, and Risacher don't look like they have Zion or Ant level talent. Hard to even tell with Reed since he can't get out of the G League.
I really like Castle, but historically I think Castle will be the weakest ROY winner since Mike Miller?
Wemby 21/11/4
Banchero 20/7/4
Barnes 15/8/4
Ball 16/6/6
Ja 18/4/7
Luka 21/8/6
Simmons 16/8/8
Brogdon 10/3/4
KAT 18/11/2
Wiggins 17/4/2
MCW 17/6/6
Dame 19/3/7
Kyrie 19/4/5
Blake 23/12/4
Tyreke 20/5/6
Rose 17/4/6
KD, Roy, CP3, etc..
Brogdon is close on stats but Brogdon shot over 40% from 3 vs Castle's 29% and won 42 games and when he took over as starting PG took Milwaukee to the playoffs.

Re: Matas Progress Tracker
It’s insane that Billy iced him for 50% of the season on a sub-500 losing team, with an underperforming Pat, Terry and undersized guards blocking his opportunities.
I get it- make him earn the minutes. But he was Dalen Terry’d for 3 months, when it was obvious he was more NBA ready and talented.
Could we have found a middle ground between DNPs/5mpg stints and a 30mpg starting job?

Re: Matas Progress Tracker
absolutely we could and billy should have. It's really soured me on billy . At the very least matas could have helped propel this torpedo season out of the slums . It could have resulted in more wins so I'm kinda happy billy fumbled it .MrSparkle wrote:It’s insane that Billy iced him for 50% of the season on a sub-500 losing team, with an underperforming Pat, Terry and undersized guards blocking his opportunities.

Posted this in another thread, but PWill is out for 2 weeks with knee tendonitis. So more minutes for Matas.

Re: Matas Progress Tracker
Billy kept him on bench for 10 f.... min after great start into game! Thats beyond moronic! 2nd half he wasnt that good, but he also didnt even try to dribble anymore, he wasnt agressive anymore, he mostly stood in corner.. also then made 2 turnovers, lost balls in one minute and that was it!
Its clear as f.... day that these bench "experts" couldnt develop any player, any at all..
Hey rook, just stand in the corner, get out of the way.. maybe you can try one dribble per game, shoot few open threes, but otherwise just stand in the corner

I want to blame Billy, but there is something just so odd about Matas' lack of 2nd half aggression.

Billy always does this. Plays him big in the 1st half and the 2nd half pulls him for making one mistake.

would like to see more consistent rebounding...he has the talent and we are a BAD rebounding team otherwise

That is actually not true. We are 8th in rebounding. 1st in defensive rebounding.
We basically dont bother offensive rebound though.

whoa! I was unaware! I still wish he'd get more boards! But maybe that's by design? have him as the outlet guy?

Maybe just orders from bench, that he should leave to vets to handle ball and rest of the stuff.. that he shouldnt be in front role when game is going into more decisive phase.
But he should be at least more aggressive on rebounds.. but I also think thats on coaching stuff! Half of the team is timid on that area.. you gotta preach every day to be aggresive on boards, second chances are gold in basketball.

That’s been Billy’s strategy for years with all these putrid defensive rosters he has had. Get back to hedge your bets.

We're 19th in total rebounds per 100 possessions. 6th in defensive rebounding %, 28th in offensive. We definitely suck at rebounding.

If they cede offensive rebounding, are they bad at it or just so bad at defense they can't even attempt to find out if they are bad at offensive rebounding?
This team is bad at a lot but they are fine at rebounding.
