FWIW, Paxson mentioned that they do not have a max slot and they have to work around that. One thing I would question the Bulls FO is about not planning this flexibility well if Melo doesn't come because of money. They should have known that Free Agency has very low odds to begin with and if you don't have most of the important issues taken care off...then your chances are very low.

We have time for post-mortem if things don't work out but the Bulls have to seriously consider putting all their eggs in the free agency basket every 4 years. It is just a gross underutilization of basketball capabilities of the organization. You keep dumping assets for a few years before free agency and then get a Plan B, C type guy and reboot again in 4 years. That is not what the Spurs do even if the Bulls do not have Tim Duncan.

The only thing I would add is that perhaps there never was the intention of giving Melo the max. Maybe Garpax all along wanted Melo at a discount, and only on a discount, so as to add to what was already in place. A calculated risk to be sure, appealing to the "winning" side of a Melo decision. And, quite frankly, that may have been the only approach that had a chance of working. The Bulls could never out-money the Knicks, nor out-lifestyle the Lakers or Heat.

We signed the best FA available outside of the Big 3 (on the best deal) and picked up the best group of vet FA's. They also signed Boozer before the decision was made - so I'm not sure how they 'waited around'.

Everything you wrote is exactly why I asked why we felt so confident before all this began. Unless we had a back room deal, it's hard to see the cause for such confidence. And if it goes as is being broadly predicted, will make you wonder if we should have sunk this much time and effort into a cause that is being painted as extreme long shot.

That's why I hated the Taj dump plan. Most teams win in the league because of additions and subtractions of players like Boozer. But, if you start dumping all your good players to get a star, it better be LeBron in his prime. Otherwise, that ship is going nowhere better than a good depth team with chemistry.

I sincerely doubt LeBron will go to Cleveland but even if he goes there, the chances of him winning there are much, much smaller than what he could do in Miami in 2010. If you have a top heavy roster, those players better be in their prime, far superior to others in the league.

I don't know how the Bulls build but a lot of us had guessed that the Heat will slow down and not win this year(off-course, you are never sure). I still don't understand the Bulls 2012, 2013 teams with Deng, Boozer etc... when everybody knew that team had no second playmaker(Derrick healthy or not). The delay of rebooting the roster is what I never agreed with.

All depends on what LA is willing to sign him for. All of the other contender options have at most the MLE to offer him.

I really hope that's true. I only like Gasol as a Melo enticer.
