At some point, the "whataboutthem" defense, if there are enough other violators, starts to take effect. I believe that is what happened here. The NBA is just about giving up on prosecuting gun-jumping as tampering. I think they ought to make that official policy, and stick to prosecuting only tampering cases that involve a team trying to recruit another team's player in a non-FA setting.

I remember in 2018 when the NBA warned the Bulls not to rest healthy players (Robin Lopez and Justin Holiday) because they wanted to discourage tanking. I never understood why the Bulls were singled out when so many teams have done that.

I mean at the end of the day, fans of other teams are upset about this. But what crime was committed, and against who?

If Lonzo and his team/agent knew he wanted to play for the Bulls in May, why does he need to wait until August 3rd?

Keep in mind, Lonzo is under NO obligation to talk to any team at the start of free agency. His agent can block every call that comes in at 6pm on August 3rd if he wants to. If he wanted to listen to other offers and was open to that, wouldn't he have done that? But he knew for a while he wanted to be on the Bulls.

It's not like the Bulls "snuck in" and stole him, we can assume some level of competency from the player in what they want. No one was hurt here, just hurt feelings.

I think ultimately the Bulls and Heat had both Ball and Lowry on the table last year and just couldnt get it done for various reasons.

They basically both consummated deals they already had in place.

They only got a slap on the wrist because they did it at 10:59 instead of 11:00

Police aren't remotely consistent with speeding stops, either. Sometimes it's just about who is at the wrong place at the wrong time. It stinks - but there's a reality factor. Thankfully, the low penalty suggests the "it stinks" factor was, in fact, factored in.

Agreed on some level but there are countless places to speed--there are a finite number of teams and transactions.

Even Hollinger mentioning DDR's comments re: lakers should make the league want to know more.
Its currently based on a snitch system--someone whines about it--then they (may) look. And this is heavily dependent on god knows what.

And the fix is rather easy--abolish the current rules. I fail to see the potential harm in that.
And with players calling more of their shots--its just sour grapes by franchises trying to take player choice away.

And the Lonzo situation specifically--could they not just match?
Lowry was a UFA--so I say tough crap-he wanted Miami and he got it--his call. Toronto did a S&T the same they did for Bosh--because its better than nothing. They just must be sore their guys keep taking their talents to South Beach.

But yes the 2nd rounder does show the NBA knows its BS.

We were basically punished with $3M fine. Because that is rate for 2nd rounder. I still wanna see proof and evidence why we were found guilty in first place. To think that after 4 months of investigation all they could come up is 2nd rounder is so terrible from their standpoint. They basically decided to punish us with something because they spend 4 months finding nothing and wasting time.
