To be fair - Melo is from NY and will be getting more money there. This isn't that big of a surprise, it just stings because this always seems to happen with the Bulls.

Think you forgot to mention Butler? Your numbers seem to include him.
Those numbers do not include Butler, if the Bulls keep Butler, the number goes down to $15.4M
Keeping Rose, Noah, Taj, Butler, McDemott, Smith - $15.4M
Keeping Rose, Noah, Taj, McDemott, Smith - $16.9M
Keeping Rose, Noah, Taj - $18.4M
I will go back and add the calculations to my OP.

Melo's #1 choice is probably that he wants to stay in NY and win. So he should be trying to recruit people like Pau to join him; my guess is if he can't get someone like that to help him win in NY; he'll leave and join the team that gives him the best option for money and wins which is Chicago

Not surprised. I've felt all along Melo was about the money.
Very, very much disagree about the people dissing Gasol. He is one of the most skilled bigs in the history of the NBA. I think you take his performance under D'Antoni with a huge grain of salt.
There's a reason that Sam Presti, Greg Popovich, Phil Jackson and Thibs are all after him in a big way. Those guys know basketball. Gasol would be a great addition and give the Bulls arguably the best group of big guys in the NBA. That counts for something.
You keep trying to add some solid guards/wing guys and hope McDermott is everything Thibs thinks he is and do the best you can.
I think deep down we all knew there wasn't some FA savior that was going to come riding in on a white horse to form a super team here. Right?

I was Mr optimism until now.
Its over. All over. This was all a giant jerk off. We blew our wad and got nothing...
If you think Melo recruiting Pau to NY can somehow end in Melo coming to Chicago your deluded.
Game over man. Game over.
How does opting out and going across the country meeting with rival teams improve your ability to recruit though? Other free agents don't even know if Melo's gonna stay in New York and probably wonder why he's so hesitant to just re-sign with them or just opt back in. Come on, these conspiracy theories don't make any sense. Maybe Melo really doesn't know what he wants yet but wants to have multiple strong options.
Anyway you look at this its a nail in our coffin. If he was prepared to leave he would not be trying to bring talent there. He could just as easily have opted out to create space for Gasol to sign.

it's really mind boggling
You really want to stick with Ny for the rest of your career and get your ass handed to you every year by us and the Heat?
Jesus, have fun then
If Melo was always set on returning to New York, then yeah, I'd be irritated that he jerked the FO around and wasted their time. Other than that, I have no real problem with taking the money to stay. Obviously would have liked him to take a pay cut to play in Chicago, but whatever, still gotta hope Rose stays healthy or none of this will matter anyway.

Who says he was prepared to leave? You realize it's possible that he was just undecided and wanted to see his options. And $3 million is not legit cap space for Pau Gasol. Stop it.
Jerry Reinsdorf; the undisputed king of allowing his GM's to run amok with unchecked power and ego.

Might just be seeing whats Pau's plan....maybe team up in Chi.
Just a guess, who knows? Tryin to be positive
Dude you are spinning. If he was planning to leave he would not be recruiting anyone to NY. Makes no sense
It makes sense if he wants to be able to walk away saying that he searched for every reason to stay and even did some recruiting of his own. I just don't know at this point.
This still doesn't mean anything. Remember he's looking for reasons to stay. Also wasn't it reported that LeBron tried to get Bosh to come to the Cavs before agreeing with the Heat back in 2010? This means nothing to me. With that said, I believe that he will go back to NY.

When, in the history, the Bulls sign a big FA on the market?
Ben Wallace was once the biggest fish available. And they got him. But he sucked.
Yeah, I saw that on 2006. I saw Ron Mercer on 1999 too
What I think is... there's something wrong with the way this maneagement runs this team. If the Bulls don't get D-Rose on the draft, we will be whithout an all star caliber player since MJ. And c'mon, this is Chicago, is not a Milwauke or Sacramento. We have the third big market in the USA. Just imagine the damage that a Mark Cuban type of owner will do in Chicago.
I think the changes in the Bulls has to start with Jerry Reinsdorf, John Paxson and Gar Forman. Is to much mistakes and strikes out: T-Mac, Kobe, Pau Gasol (still on top of his game), KG, LeBron, Wade, Bosh. All of them are especulated here in Chicago and none of them come. Instead of that, we get Ron Mercer, Ben Wallace (a DPOY at the time but not what we looking for in 06. we need scoring back then - and now, by the way) and Carlos Boozer. And we lose Ben Gordon, Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich (in 2010) for cap relief or for not go over the top (being cheap).
In the main time, the Lakers get Gasol, Dwight Howard (ok, just for one year, still they have the balls to try something) and keep Kobe. Miami get LeBron and Bosh. Knicks get Melo and Amare. New Jersey get Vince Carter. Dallas get Monta Ellis (not a superstar, but a great offensive player) Even the Raptors get a Rudy Gay type of player via trade.
What I want to say is: Gar, Pax and Reinsdorf doesn't have the balls to run a franchise in a big market city like Chicago. Is time to change everything.

Big FA's yes......good ones ...NEVER!
Thats not an indictment of the Bulls....its the reality of the FA process.
For love, not money.

if Woj is right, who is the bigger scumbag in your guys opinion,
Melo needing an ego stroke tour to get his max
Or
Leon Rose for leading on Thibs and the Bulls like this?????
derricks probably like ....f*** it man, this is why I don't do this sh**
i hope this isn't how it really went down, I really don't want to put Melo in that same slime ball category as Lebron
hope I'm overreacting and Woj and everybody else for that matter still don't know what dafuq is going on

If anything, this thread is pretty easily weeding out who didn't want Melo in the first place. The quickness some folks are giving up is just too easy. Like just too damn easy.

I'm going to guess that Leon Rose will make a bigger commission off Melo's contract, so there you go.

Not exactly apples to apples.
How so?
Westbrook and Rose both had MCL's which are less serious. Rose also had an acl. West rooks surgeries were just cleaning up his knee not additional injuries.
