For starters, I very much want Luol Deng back. I'm not a tanker but even tankers should be happy that we seem fully capable of losing even with Luol playing. Either way I can't realistically envision a team next year that we could assemble that would be better without Luol than with.

So while I hope to have Luol back I to see the huge risk in waiting till the offseason to negotiate a contract extension.

I still to this day defend the FO's decision to keep Asik even though we ended up "losing him for nothing". We were title contenders and the trades we were offered didn't make us better, we took a shot at the title.

We are not contenders this year so losing Deng this offseason wouldn't be offset by our going for it this season.

If we were so determined to keep him how are we so far off on negotiations?

Hopefully it's the latter..he's got to go. They better not try to sign him for 11/12 mil a year.

This is good news. I'm hoping the Bulls can re-sign him and he can retire as a Bull.

I agree. People say that he deserves same money as Igoudola but Igoudola is ironman compared to Deng.

Even though this is ESPN, this falls into what nitetrain has been reporting with his sources, for the past few weeks.

What the hell!?!?!?

We arent going to trade Deng? Even if by some miracle we resign him at a lower number than he wants, we'll be capped out again. How will we get a SG? More ballhandling? Does anybody have answers?

We have two high-value picks this draft without lifting a finger and Mirotic coming over if GarPax do it right.

Knowing this team, it will be a top priority to resign him. So I fully expect someone to overpay him to go elsewhere and we get nothing. Say hello to Asik and BG.

Fortunately for us, Deng will keep us at about 30 wins and make sure we don't get a high lotto pick to replace him

Why not both?

It looks now like we'll be adding two 1st round picks this summer and a 22 year old Mirotic. That's a lot of young blood.

Dump Boozer, Keep Deng, Trade Buckets and MDJ. Hopefully tank hard enough for a top 10 pick and maybe another top 15 pick from CHA. I'm not a cap expert but that's the route I would want to go.

Edit. Including bringing Mitrioc over.

It should be both new young blood and new established blood.

I've discussed this in the other thread but after going back in forth, I think you try hard to resign him. Assuming we amnesty Boozer, Deng doesn't really limit our flexibility by giving him $12-13 a year. I think holding out for free agents to sign with us is risky and probably not worth it. The only downside is that Deng gets us a few more wins while the tanking process continues.

And a guys like Parker and Wiggins will be fine playing SG. Lebron started as a SG in the league. I do think you sell high on Butler because we won't be able to afford his extension. I also try hard as hell to get back Asik and do away with Noah if we get the chance.

Also, who knows if Mirotic is coming over next year, i'm sure that has a lot to do whether or not we bring back Deng, and for how much.

I've been saying this is the most likely outcome for a few weeks now. Would anyone be surprised ifthe Bulls:

Re-sign Deng
Keep Boozer
Trade some salary to get under what they need to sign Mirotic to the MLE
Draft the likes of Doug McDermitt and Wayne Seldon(which wouldn't be a terrible thing)
Hope Derrick Rose comes back healthy.

Hell, the Bulls are taking a big chance right now by not trading Deng. He has an achilles injury. What if he ends up tearing the achilles and missing the rest of the season?

Then what?

I'm not rooting for him to get hurt, but if Deng tears his achilles, wouldn't it be the best case scenario?

1. His value goes down so we sign Deng for 9mil/year
2. Bulls become a lock for top 5 pick in the lottery

Trading him and getting back a non-useful player with salary on the books for 2014? A bigger train wreck.

Letting him expire is not the worst situation.

Boozer is gone next year, especially if we're keeping Deng.

11/12 million a year would be a pay cut (14 mill salary this year) and a good deal.
