Well the minute Ben Wallace was allowed to wear a headband was when Skiles lost control of the team. They went from being one win away from an easy road to the ECF one season to vastly underachieving the next (when the headband rule was lifted for Wallace).

Mavs and Heat used to have the same rule.
I thought it was because Paxson hated that players like E-Rob, Crawford, Curry, etc. all used to mess with their headbands so much and it somehow became a distraction?
I do think it's a dumb rule though, especially considering Paxson let Ben Wallace and Rip Hamilton wear it, even if Rip's was to keep sweat from getting inside the mask. I guess it's one of those things we've gotten used to.

Well that's the official stance afaik, but I don't think anyone believes it's the actual reason.
