That's so hyperbolic it's honestly not worth a response.

It’s not hyperbolic at all. It’s pretty much spot on. And Deng is my second favorite Bulls player of all time and I think they should retire his number.

He was a below average ball handler for his position, but to say he could barely dribble without looking at the ball is absurd.

You can't fault people who either don't watch the games or have no clue what they're watching.

And I'm a HUGE Lu fan, I thought he could be an All-NBA player if he would have just shot 3's instaed of launching so many 21-foot jumpers. And if he had any ability at all to create off the dribble.

Yep, I don't watch games. You've got me.

DuckIII wrote:As arguably the biggest Luol Deng fan on the board, and someone who believes in Williams, I’d like to briefly address some of this:

1. Williams has already showed not better, but drastically better, ball handling skills than peak Luol Deng. One of the amazing things about Luol is that he was able to have such an impressive career as a perimeter player despite having a virtually non-existent handle.

2. Similarly, Williams physical profile combination of size, strength, vert, second jump and speed is significantly superior to Deng’s. I wish they had done all the pre-draft measurables because my guess would be that Williams’ would be well ahead of Deng’s in 100% of the categories.

3. The thing, though, is that Deng’s extremely high intellect, court awareness and work ethic were all absolutely elite by NBA standards. If you did a deep dive video into Deng’s awareness and ability to read the game defensively and without the ball, and compared it to that of Williams, they would be nothing alike. Deng’s video would be a clinic, Williams would be, um, an instructional video in what not to do.

In many ways, so far anyway, Deng and Williams are pretty much complete opposites of one another. It is a bizarre comp.

I believe #3 is underrated by most posters. It is much easier to see physical attributes and skills, but drive to improve and work ethic are invisibly the most important determinant to NBA success. Deng was the not just great at it, but he also directly impacted Jimmy's and Taj's development by serving as a mentor and role model. I see Zach trying to do that for White and Williams, and will be optimistic to see similar results.

I'm not too excited about Pat so far, but 2 things to add.

1) Pat's vision and passing look to me like his most impressive skill. The ball is in and out of his hands amazingly fast and he spots open guys and delivers the ball almost as good as Thad, who is elite.

2) While his man defense was not great, I was impressed with his help defense. I think it also stems from his vision.

Lighting that fire under him already. I think he's going to come in aggressive as hell next season.

Yeah, that's really awesome.

It's great to see a head coach, taking it upon himself to take a young player like Patrick under his wings, and show him what playoff basketball is all about. I really don't know what Patrick will become as a player, but if he is getting this type of attention from his head coach, he is putting himself up for success, and that's all we can really ask for as fans. It's really up to him to take all of this knowledge and care, and put in the work.

Clearly the Bulls have a very high opinion of what Williams can develop into. And they are right to view things that way, as his upside is so tantalizingly obvious.

I don’t have any idea how this will all turn out. Pat’s mentality is such a wild card. But if it does not work out it won’t be because the Bulls failed to attempt to develop him properly. They’ve gone all in on him as a core player. It’s great to see, and hopefully it works.

I think that was all he was missing in his rookie season. Aggressiveness. But it was his Rookie season. He had an abbreviated pre-season, no Rookie League, and he came off the bench in his one year in College. Considering that, and his age and limited experience I'm glad he was basically thrown to the wolves last year. He got a lot of minutes, he had to cover a lot of All Stars, and he survived. He played with a level head. From all accounts he was constantly asking for help from his more experienced teammates, especially Thad. He wants to be great. And he's got good Physical tools. He really needs to work on developing a few "go to" moves. He didn't utilize his interior floater game as much as he should have. I hope he comes into camp later this year with the mindset that he is the Number 3 offensive option after Zach and Vooch. Not Number 5. Being deferential as a Rookie is no sin. But now he can come in an start asserting himself. And I think he will.

I think people have to accept that P Will is going to start and is considered an assumption going forward. His development over the next few years will likely define our level of success

So we have 3 solid in pwill, Zach and Vooch. If we sign Theis I think that is 4. So the question is what do we do at the 1, especially with Coby being dinged up and maybe not an ideal 1 next to Zach.

That's the core we are going to run with.

The crazy thing is Patt Williams did very good this season. He definitely needs to be more agressive though. He had the toughest assignment on defense every night. At 19 years old he’s a much better player than Sato. Sato is almost 30 and still lacks aggressiveness. Pat Williams did some very nice things last year.

Congrats to Pat!

I do think its crazy how the votes are though. Some of the votes are odd. Like how would Okoro have more votes than Pat? We complained about Pat but Pat is better than everything Okoro did this season LOL And there is no way Tate should be over Quickley either.

Meh, seems like he got it just for being played a lot of minutes.

I like Pat, but right now he is the definition of the difference between potential greatness and greatness. He's got a lot of work to do - hope he does it. Also, hope he doesn't get the wrong training advice like Lauri got.

Pat was 10th in votes. About right. Best thing he could do this summer is train with Jimmy Butler. He needs to develop his ball handling and a go-to move. But his biggest need is a killer mindset. I wonder if Jimmy would take him.
