2014 Free Agent under the radar players

Post#1 » by basghetti80 » Mon Jan 20, 2014 8:23 pm

A lot of talk recently especially since Deng and Teague moves has been on using this space to chase a Melo or even a Hayward, Stephenson type. As things stand now we would have something like this(assuming Boozer is amnestied)

Rose
Butler, Snell
Dunleavy
Gibson
Noah

For sake of arguement lets say Mirotic comes in somewhere slightly above MLE leaving us with roughly 8-10 million to spend on draft pick(s) and FA. Why not in this scenario try to sign a couple 3-4 million type guys to build a deep roster? Bigman depth and guard depth would make the most sense. Here are some names to consider

Jordan Crawford
Trevor Ariza
Ramon Sessions
Shaun Livingston
Vince Carter
Mo Williams
Jodie Meeks
Ray Allen
Brandon Rush
Wes Johnson
Nate Robinson
Xavier Henry
Marvin Williams
Elton Brand
Jordan Hill
Chris Kaman
Jason Smith
Greg Steimsma

Now if you could get 2 of these guys plus a vet min backup PG like Hinrich or Augustin along with a draft pick would that not be a real deep roster?

No combination of players from that list will net us anything that will get us to a championship level. The depressing realization is I'm not sure there are any moves that could get us over the hump, period. Even if we were able to magically clear enough cap space to acquire both Gordon Hayward and Nikolas Mirotic - plus land on a mid-round pick -- AND have Derrick Rose stay healthy.....we still wouldn't get over the hump.

We could probably win a title with Kevin Love, Embiid, Gordon Hayward, and a healthy Derrick Rose though. :o

After we pay Mirotic and sign our draft pick we will have $2m ( approx ) left over before we can add/ sign vet minimum players

I'd give the $2m to DJ

We badly need a guard who can penetrate and collapse the D and back up point. We need 3 points who can produce on the roster

Robinson would be ideal but he has a player option for $2.5m and will opt in unless he gets more years and money somewhere else

So that just leaves vet minimum guys that will be fighting for 2 spots on the assumption we fill out the roster with Erick Murphy and our lower cost 2nd rounder

If they are available for the minimum give me Jodie Meeks and Jordan Hill. Absolutely .

Meeks may be there ...but Hll , I doubt it . He's value up to $3m

Jason Smith is also who I would want at vet minimum

Also would take Al Farouq Aminu in a heartbeat but think his market is up to $2m

A lot of those guys will earn cash up to the MLE level imo. I think Kaman could be had for the minimum and would be a big upgrade at backup C.

I don't know about caveman because his defense is kinda bad. I think I would give jordan Hill that 2mil and then sign Livingston to the vet min.

It really depends on how many picks the Bulls have, and where they are. If the Bulls are picking 8 and 11, I would be anticipating two rotation players, and the Bulls might be looking to sign a couple of towel wavers. However, if they only have one pick, and it is in the late teens, then they will need to pickup a guy to give some quality minutes in free-agency.

Assuming the Bulls sign Mirotic and keep MDJ, their only glaring needs are at PG & C. I'm thinking a backup C would be nice, since that's been an area of need since Asik left. Jordan Hill is probably the most viable option on that list.

Spencer Hawes and Shaun Livingston

Rose/Livingston
Butler/Snell
Dunleavey
Mirotic/Gibson/Murphy
Noah/Hawes

Add in a pick or two and we could be very deep. Hawes currently makes 6.5 million, who knows what he'll command on the open market but if it stays around that I'm all for having great big man depth. Great depth with two bigs capable of spacing the floor in Hawes and Mirotic and two who are some of the league's best defenders in Noah and Gibson.

Once the season is over we'll have better idea of things. I think Mike D is as good as gone and heading to the draft we'll have Rose, Snell, Butler, Gibson and Noah under contract. Boozer as well but he is 99.9% gone via the amnesty clause so why bring him up. The first step is what picks and who we get in the draft.

I'm not sure if it's those guys on the list but I do see the Bulls wanting a much deeper team going forward. I am not one who think we land LBJ Melo or that we even have a decent shot. I see us landing Nikola and then adding quality depth. It's just hard to pinpoint certain players this early.

I think if we are using these guys to fill out our bench we use a model similar to the bench mob.

Livingston = Watson
Brandon Rush= Brewer
Dunleavy= Korver
Mirotic= Taj
Jordan Hill= Asik

These aren't exact comparisons but these guys have similar traits to there bench mob comparison( except mirotic and taj). Livingston is our playmaking defense backup PG, Rush is our good defensive SG, Dunleavy is our 3pt shooter, Mirotic and Taj may be exchangeable at that position, and Hill is a defensive center like Asik though he's not as good as Asik he is a big body.

Honestly, with all of these guys here, and this goes for most of the posts in this thread, I think they're going to cost more than most expect. Jordan Hill has been exceptional the last few years, I think he's up for near MLE money. Same thing with Livingston, I think he's due for a bit 3-4mil per.

Your right but I think their price may vary depending on who is calling them. I think Livingston would take a min deal to play on a great team like the Bulls. Hill may be different though since he is still pretty young.

Yeah you're right, you never know. That said, it's easy to forget that the vast majority of players can talk about having different priorities, but almost always follow the money.

Yea well my most wanted guy is Livingston who might be more willing on that list than anybody to take the minimum. I'm looking at his past contracts and the past 3 years he has taken the minimum.

If he stays healthy until the Nets are booted from the playoffs, his stock will be way higher than it has been in past years. I'd also like him, but I think he'll get more than the min somewhere.

Xavier Henry or Vince Carter. One of those two.
