Is there a scenario emerging where the Bulls lose Butler?

I think there is starting to be such a possibility. Butler's slump has lasted long enough now that we should have no high assurance he will go back to what he did in the first 2 months. He could yet, but he could be regressing to his mean, or end up somewhere past what he was last year, but also not near the 23 PER, .600 TS%, 20 PPG superstar he looked like early on.
Considering he still isn't a good shooter, he remains something of a wrench in our spacing and offensive flow, especially with the 2 clogging big guys down low, and that Rose doesn't shoot that well either.
At the rate he's going I can't say he is definitely worth a max contract.
Is it possible some other team though still throws 14 or 15 million at Jimmy next summer, and if he hasn't regained his form, the Bulls decide that is not worth matching?

We need Dunleavy back for Jimmy to operate in the post and make his cuts. When you have Tony Snell or Hinrich on the perimeter, the defense can focus on Butler.

He is not a max contract anymore (unless his level of play increases). That said, will the FO overpay ? I think so.

I didn't like that secret conversation LeBron and Butler were having at the beginning of the game

I doubt it. but if there is any chance of that they need to move him firs instead of lose him for nothing.

I just don't understand the shock value. Did anyone expect Butler to keep that pace up all season? It's not like his talent is off the charts or anything.

They better decide before the trade deadline if they think somebody wants to pay him the max and he will not be a max guy. Worst thing you can do is stack up another bad contract on top of the Rose deal.

It is a random thought thread. Jimmy is not so bad as he is right now and may be he was not as good as he showed in November.
He will improve and everyone goes through slumps. The contract might not be a max from any team if his game goes bad. But, it is like asking if Love will leave Cleveland if they don't go to the finals.

Not a chance. He's coming off a bereavement as well as some likely injuries. Slow your roll.

OK wait a minute, so everyone is going to forget the first 30 games and only remember the last 10 from Jiimmy?
A stretch where like everyone has sucked bigtime over this 10 game stretch?
A little bit of an overreaction.
Remember Derrick was D league material 5 games ago. Players go through ups and downs.
But there is no way being up and down the last 10 games is going to magically change what he did for the first 30.

You know that was some recruiting ishh going on. That being said, Butler has secured a max contract with his first half play this year. Whether its from another team legitimately believing it, another team trying to screw us, the Bulls believing it, or feeling cornered to match.
Either way, Butler is getting the max.

Doing something for 30 games doest not prove its your new baseline for a whole year.
Paul George played almost at a LeBron level for about that long last year (~27 PER), then went back to being just an inefficient volume scorer the rest of the year (though still great D).
LeBron has began seasons with better numbers than MJ through only 30 games, (heck so did Anthony Davis and Westbrook this year) only then to backslide down to their usual numbers by the end of the year.
If Butler had 4 seasons of superstar play under his belt, then it would make sense to say 'oh its just 10 bad games'. But its the opposite, he has a career of being a defensive role player, and one short stretch of dominance, based mostly on getting to the line when teams didn't care about game planning for him.
I don't know which way he will go from here on out. But there is certainly now a possibility he becomes a real tough issue for the Bulls in the summer. He could end up easily in the area of an Andre Iguodola offensive player (17-18 PER, weak 3pt shot, average efficiency), and still with the great D, but do you match a max for that?

Playoffs will dictate everything.
Everyone is on the trade list next offseason. Even if we win the title.

It seems a bit odd to post this right after Jimmy just put up 20/7/3. It's at least a better statline than some of his recent ones.

10 of his points were in 4th quarter garbage time when it was long over.
He just isn't getting involved and impacting the offense like he was early on. A lot talk about Dunleavy, but a true superstar should not need Mike Dunleavy or else have his production fall by like half.
