AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Derrick Rose said after the Chicago Bulls' 100-91 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Friday night that he had apologized to his teammates for missing Wednesday's practice because of what Tom Thibodeau called "travel issues" during the point guard's return from a beach vacation after the All-Star break.

While it is unclear exactly when the apology took place in the last two days, Rose's game was clearly not in rhythm after a week off as he had one of the worst performances of the season.

In 31 minutes, Rose scored just eight points and was 2-for-9 from the field. He added two assists, two rebounds and six turnovers.

"Being one of the leaders, for anyone to miss, I wouldn't want it to be me," Rose said. "It hurt. I apologized to the guys and that was it."

While Rose acknowledged the error, he said he did not understand why people would be critical towards the practice absence.

Derrick Rose said after the Bulls' loss on Friday that he had apologized to his teammates for missing Wednesday's practice because of what Tom Thibodeau called "travel issues."
"Not at all," Rose said. "We're over .500, we got another game tomorrow, so we got to put this performance behind (us)."

Thibodeau has discussed all season how important he feels practice time is, especially with a healthy roster, as the Bulls had heading into Friday's game. He was obviously frustrated that Rose missed Wednesday's practice.

What do you guys think? Should Rose have been suspended?

It's unclear if and what repercussions there would be if Snell or Bairstow or McDermott, etc would have missed practice. I personally think that if no one else would be suspended in a similar situation, it makes sense. However, with the way Rose played last night, and his inconsistency along with the team, he shouldn't have been left off the hook. But again, a similar standard should be made for the entire team. Perhaps he couldn't make it due to weather, flight issues, or personal situation.

The most "recent" situation I can recall was this:
http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribu ... pende.html
"G.M. John Paxson suspened second-year forward Tyrus Thomas two games for an unexcused absence from Wednesday's practice.

Thomas will serve the suspension during Chicago's next two games, sitting out the game against Cleveland on Thursday at the United Center and Friday at Boston.

This is the second internal discipline doled out to Thomas in his two seasons with the Bulls.

Paxson fined Thomas $10,000 last season for telling the Tribune that he was merely going to the league's All-Star weekend and participate in the dunk contest for "the free money."

It's also the second internal discipline doled out to a Bull this season."

I don't think there is anything more worthless than stories about veterans and practice. Practice time for a seasoned vet who has spent five years in the same sets is nothing like practice time for a you on your high school team.

To this day, I feel like the butchering that Allen Iverson took says everything about the media landscape at the time, and its willingness to fire up consumers but pushing misleading content. It also said something about how dumb fans were before the advent of social media and the walls came down. It didn't say anything about Iverson's professionalism.

I say yes suspend him. The Bulls should be running Derrick Rose, not Derrick/Reggie running the Bulls. He's no longer good enough to be calling the shots round here.

I have been in my department for 7 years.....I know everything that needs to happen in a work week, in and out.

So, can I just miss work?

A LARGE part of my salary is to show leadership and engagement to the rest of the team I am part of. Thats how this works.

WIthout knowing the particulars of the reason his travel was delayed, if he was working with the team to get there + the team approved his travel plans + he tried his hardest to get back to practice than no. If any of the three I didn't say are true, then yes, suspend him.

IDK, but something has to happen. I guess a fine would be useful for this situation. WTF is going on with Rose, and I didn't like his comment about the team loss as well.

Details may not be clear regarding Rose's travel issues and communication with the team; however when I do go on vacation or trip, for the most part, especially in the winter, I had a day of cushion for travel incase I had any delays/cancellations, etc due to weather. I'm expected to be at work.

It is bad judgement on part of Derrick. As Thibs said, he should understand as the leader, star player that these things matter. It is too late to suspend him now if that was even warranted. The best thing Thibs should have done is start Kirk or Aaron yesterday and bring Derrick off the bench to make him remember the incident.

As Thibs said....where-ever he traveled to, he should have planned to come back on Tuesday night and not on Wednesday. Derrick said that he thought he could make it because it was an evening practice. With winter weather, he or his handlers should have known better.

Is it a big deal for the long term? No!! But, he needs practice more than a Noah or Taj missing practice. He is the main ball handler and has missed games/practices even earlier in the season. He needs to get in tune with his team-mates and practising new sets which Thibs might have planned during the break.

In theory, I would say yes. In practice, it would kill any motivation Rose still has left, so there's no chance of it happening.

The difference is that Tyrus just decided not to go, while Rose called beforehand and let them know he had an issue that would prevent him from making it. Suspensions are for guys who willfully violate team rules. A fine would be more appropriate since it was poor planning that caused him to miss a mandatory practice.

I don't care and I don't know anything about the details. it's on Bulls management and coaching to handle the situation, if there even is a situation.

I can't believe I even care about Rose and his missed practice. I should be worrying about my life.

Maybe we need a Bulls forum where we live in our normal reality, where missing practice is a thing that's looked at as a bad thing, and a Derrick Rose forum, where that reality wherein Derrick Rose has not and never will do anything wrong, if he says something wrong it's just because he isn't a good speaker and doesn't know what he said, and any question of whether he's still one of the best players in the league is absurd can thrive.

edit: I'll say a light fine, as I'll take him at his word that he intended to make it to practice, but flying the day or was risky and irresponsible

I call bull ****. :-) You could miss a scheduling meeting without repercussions if you encountered travel issues. If you're talking about AI, I think you also have to consider what practice means to a veteran playing an NBA season. Nobody practices at the end of the season when everybody's body is worndown, and I think the media decided not to report that part of the story.
