Man, this is just devastating and I hope he recovers but the reality is that the FO will have to think long and hard about what to do legally with Rose and his remaining 2 years. Forget this year and that is a wash financially. Pains me to write this but it will come up, so........what to do?

1. Rose retires and requests to forego his last 2 years? Not likely I think.
2. The FO and Rose agree a trade next year is the best option? Again not likely with that much money tied up.
3. The most likely scenario could be the Bulls simply waive Rose during the Jul 1 - 31 Aug timeframe and use the "Stretch provision" to carry his salary over 5 years in payments directly to Rose and as CAP hits. It lessens the blow and allows them to only have 8-8.3 million a year until the end of the 19-20 season as the CAP should be sky high.

They'll likely just ride things out. Only two more years after this one.

If they were to waive him using the stretch provision, they would do it before the final year of his deal. Two years would be too crippling to stretch out. I think the team will keep him and reevaluate before his contract is up.

I had Bulls to the Finals the entire year, pre-season until now. Real shame. But I'm a big believer in Mirotic. There's still hope there.

As for Rose's contract, with the Sixer's picks and Hinkie's appetite for risk, I can see the OKC pick + Magic second rounder + Nuggets second rounder (high 30s for both) for Rose. Possibly a 2016 second rounder too.

Hinkie at the trade deadline talked about "optionality" and the ability to capture opportunities. Not sure Chicago can mentally handle a third Rose injury (if it's repair, not removal. Hopefully it's not a removal). Sixers can then go all-in on the 2016 Durant sweepstakes with a Rose-Durant-Noel-Embiid core with a bunch of FA shooters.

This thread and this reply might be premature, but just wanted to throw it out there. IDK. I do think y'all can get value for Rose though.

I think the option to waive him and stretch his salary will become viable if there's some FA we want to sign in 2016. Otherwise, he'll just play out his contract or will be traded for equally bad contracts.

the bulls will not use stretch provision. I do think they might deal him once it becomes clear he will not be offered a max contract extension. it makes sense for a fresh start elsewhere and team rose will request a trade. so, that move could come as early as the feb 2016 or more likely, the following summer.

I think this thread is premature. But I'll say this: using the stretch provision is a double-edged sword. It would reduce his cap hit from 20M to ~8M for the last two years of his contract, but then for the following three years we'd have ~8M on the payroll that wouldn't have been there at all otherwise. So unless there's something big to gain with cap space in 2016(we have too much committed salary even using the stretch provision on Rose to have any real space this summer) and we think we have a real shot at it, why would they do that? It's unlikely that there will be anything to gain that will be worth having that ~8M on the payroll for those additional three years.

No way the stretch that kind of money, If they decide to get rid of him, they'll trade him to Philly or some place else along with 1 or more picks.

Interesting take and with Hinkies crazy dealing it might be something to keep in mind. They have to get to the minimum salary cap and could take a flyer on Rose. Who knows.

If it is over for him (which I don't think it is), then yes, the stretch provision for the last year of his deal is really the only option I see as feasible and viable. A team can still contend with the rising cap with a $4-5M cap hit per year for 5 years-- but is it worth it? Maybe you just eat the whole thing over two years and be done with it. Tough call and depends on if they think they can contend over the next two years or not. and if any team is willing to take the risk and trade something for him and his contract (doubtful).

Certainly not both years.. but, like I said the last year of his deal could very possibly get stretched if that is the only option.

It would probably take 3 picks for them to take on $41.5M. We're not the only team looking to dump salary.

No one is taking his deal. They weren't before this latest injury. And at the same time, Bulls can't just cut him. These 2 sides are married until 2017 and if they choose to continue together it's going to be for far less money, heavily protected on the Bulls' end and most likely full of player options. Derrick has show he can still have flashes of greatness, but it's just that. The Bulls know it, the NBA knows it and his camp has to know it. Also, zero chance he passes a physical.
Derrick made his money and should understand how lucky he and his family are these injuries happened after the super max and the Adidas deal. I love him and hope he can come back and play for us again. But at this point, it's all on the Bulls.
