Why didnt Bulls make a trade for legit PG?

Post#1 » by splashbrothers » Wed Feb 25, 2015 6:23 pm

I'm sure they had a good feeling about Rose needing surgery. They couldve traded for Dragic or Brandon Knight. Mabye a future pick and Gibson. Now it appears too late.

Because they obviously didn't know Rose needed surgery. End thread.

Exactly, came in to post the same thing. I wish his injury took place a couple of weeks ago, terrible timing as usual. This offseason will be interesting, hopefully they start looking for their PG of the future through the draft or trades.

1-they didn't know (obviously)
2-Dragic had a list--we were not on it

The tradeline was just a week ago. They had no idea that this was coming?? Especially given the injuries over last few seasons.

Maybe Rondo gets waived because he is not getting along with Carlisle and Bulls could pick him up

If Derrick had stayed healthy, you think Knight or Dragic wanted to ride the bench? Dragic wanted out of Phoenix so he could have the ball in his hands at all times. Knight would be an awfully expensive backup guard to pay first round picks for... especially given he'll make darn near $15m next year.

Dragic probably wouldn't stay here and repeat the PHX dual backcourt.

But generally speaking on adding a PG, not like we haven't been playing Brooks and Rose together already most of the year, and even closing games.

The biggest issue was not retaining Augustin. He could have been kept for a relatively cheap amount and would have done just fine as a starter. We always knew Rose getting injured again was a big possibility. Brooks has been very solid, but he's no DJ.

DJ would have had to take a paycut. The Piston's paid him more than the room exception we had after signing Gasol and Mirotic.

I just hope there is at 2015 draft somewhere good draft PG pick. Hinrich is not a option, Brooks also, Rose needs to be maintained and we need longterm option at this position. I hope GarPax pull of another All-Star in late lotto or late first round draft.

We need to draft a PG that's for sure. Maybe a combo Taj/Noah + our pick can get us in the lottery.

Hindsight is 20/20. This is something that they could've addressed in the offseason not at the trade deadline, at a time where Derrick seemed well and healthy. And to answer your question, no, they did not know that this was coming, nobody did.

I would be optimistic about the Bulls if DJ was on the team. He was playing great in Detroit when Brandon Jennings went down. He's the perfect guy to have if your main PG goes down.

They had to know Rose going down was always a real risk...

He may have not taken the slight paycut, but we know he wanted to return and many believe that he would have taken the cut. As far as we know, the Bulls never seriously tried to retain him, and instead opted for waiting around for cheaper guys like Brooks.

I agree with the possibility of Rose getting injured. But, c'mon, Augustin is no game changer. We saw it enough. Maybe for a few weeks/as a backup, he would be fine.

It is not like they never spent much money on a backup PG. Didn't they spend about 3.5 million or so on CJ Watson? They made that bet on Kirk and it has backfired this year. They obviously didn't expect Kirk to have such a big role...otherwise, they would have signed somebody who could have filled that starter kind of role.

The sad thing is the drop-off is so huge from Derrick regardless of stats, it was a bad decision. I don't know who they could have got for a backup but they definitely needed a more younger Kirk as the backup.
