My rookie year we were playing the Chicago Bulls, and this is Michael Jordan’s third or fourth year in. And we were playing an exhibition game...most veterans do not like to play in exhibition games, they want to get to the real thing. I’m a wide-eyed, energetic rookie and...Michael’s going through the motions. And Chuck Person—who’s on my team—who is a trash-talker as well, is like, "Can you believe Michael Jordan, the guy everyone’s talking about, who’s supposed to be able to walk on water? You’re out here killing him, Reg! ... You should be talking to him!" And I was like, "You know what, you’re right!" "Michael...who do you think you are? The great Michael Jordan? That's right, there’s a new kid on town!" He kind of looks at me and starts shaking his head. So at half I have 10, and he has four points...end of the game, the second half, he ended up with 44 and I ended up with 12. So he outscored me 40-2. And as he's walking off, he's like, "Be sure, and be careful, you never talk to Black Jesus like that."

I think Reggie talked trash to MJ more than once.

With today's social media Jordan would be even better than he was. He would be pissed all the time.

Yeah, Reggie definitely was talking trash to michael in that 98 ecf.

And plenty of other times. I think Reggie was one of the few dudes that actually did talk trash to MJ and didn't back down.

I couldn't agree more. He was pretty damn clutch. Even though he was a Pacer all that time as a pro, Reggie definitely had a little hollywood in him. (wait, is that the opposite of, or equal to, a little african in him?) scratch that. He was flamboyant in his own way, and it made it more fun to root against him.

Did I say that reggie was better? your response makes no sense

See, this is something that the new generation may never understand about what made Jordan such a great...and feared player. He may not have been the most purely talented player of THAT era, let alone of all time. But the guy had such a swagger. Such a competitive edge that his presence alone would be enough to break his opponents' spirit. Often times, the Bulls would have games won before they even started just because of the aura that Jordan had. And to be completely honest with you, I have yet to see a player since him that has that aura.

I remember reading an article where they were interviewing an 80's era player (I can't remember who) where they described a situation where there was word that Jordan wouldn't play and how the spirits of his team was so high for that game because they knew that Jordan not playing increased the odds of them winning exponentially. Just before the game was getting ready to start, out comes Jordan suited up and ready to play. The player described his team's spirits as being broken and defeated even though the ball hadn't even been tossed yet.

This. I enjoyed rooting against him. But damn, he could be clutch.

Hell, I miss the NBA of the 90's. It was a better game.

Reggie was one of those guys you hated to play, but if he was beating the Knicks or Pistons, I hated him a little bit less.

He only trashed talked MJ once? LOL thats a joke. He couldn't stop trash talking if he wanted to. Hated him as a player but the dude had game and ice in his veins. He was definitely a guy that you had to seriously worry about single handily beating your team. Reggie was always such a great villain for Bulls fans.

Yep, think rivalries like that are what make all competitive players amp up their game even more, to the benefit of us as fans who get to see two fiercely passionate adversaries going at it.

Don't know if I can say the same about today's game, but it would definitely help the culture of the league if some division rivalries took it to another level.

Yeah. It's kind of sad that the game is more about entertainment and less about real rivalries and competitiveness. Jordan was a freak, but even guys like Reggie are more competitive than everybody today, not to mention Larry and Magic.
