Cowley interview on Bulls Zone

Thought I'd post this as Cowley doesn't resort to trolling and has some different angles on key stories which counter some of the narratives we've been hearing among fans and the media (sorry mods if this deserved to be in another thread, wasn't sure where it should be posted if that's the case).
The news about Taj is what I've always suspected, that he can play the 5/centre and that his athleticism, defence and hustle are far too valuable to sacrifice (especially given our history with injuries, Pau's horrible defence and age, Niko's D, etc).
Don't know what to make of this, but if it's true I can more than welcome some good news for a change.
• The organization is confident that Rose can return by early April.
• The FO may come to terms with Thibs this offseason (like Ralph has posted numerous times, Pax and Reinsdorf support Thibs). Cowley agrees with K.C. Johnson, that it's more like 60-40 odds that Thibs leaves, as opposed to Friedell, who thinks there's a 90%-95% chance. The players know they have the greatest chance to win if Thibs is coaching. The players (off the record) think the situation is ridiculous, and support Thibs.
• Gar-Pax won't trade Taj to free up minutes for Niko, because Noah's future is unknown. They don't want a scenario where Taj has been traded, and then Noah leaves in free agency in 2016, where we'd be royally screwed.
• Losing Noah in free agency in 2016 is a possibility with his knees and another team providing a huge contract. Cowley thinks that Noah will wait until 2016, and then sign a new deal.
• Jimmy may sign a one year deal with the Bulls this summer in order to get a bigger deal with the Bulls in 2016, when the new TV deal/revenue kicks in and the cap rises.

Crap.
Should this be locked, or can it stand?

Biggest hole we need to fill with our draft picks and possibly in FA when the cap explodes is a Center that complements Niko in both age and ability.

Well hopefully there is some momentum to Thibs staying that's some really good news. I guess it's all good news except for the Butler thing. (I really don't trust Noah's knee either and Pau may leave after next year). Butler thing kind of sucks though so we went from not giving him that contract only costing us a couple mil more per year to 10 mil more per year? Not a cap expert so could be wrong on that. If so that is huge. Can't blame the guy but man did that escalate quickly!

I can't see Butler leaving, he really wants to be here and loves being a Bull. The entire organization has stuck with him and I think that makes a huge difference.
If anything, I can see us not picking up the third year/option on Pau's contract, especially if his production starts to fall off by that point, although I anticipate one more really productive season from him.

I'm not worried about butler leaving I'm saying we went from the difference in pay being from 12 to 15 if we just locked him up vs giving him the max to now he'll probably go to 25 mil per year. Not locking him up is becoming a really costly mistake, it was always viewed as a few million mistake but this is becoming a huge one.

No we went from paying and discussing 8 millions to 12 from which we go to 15 and now to 25. 3x times up go price.

1: They shouldn't be worried about the scenario of Noah leaving, they should be concerned about the scenario that he can't play well.
2: I'd say losing Noah in 2016 is almost a lock, but that's another full season away.
3: There's no way this happens, because the Bulls have no incentive. The Bulls immediately make him a Max tender offer which means any team making him an offer has to make it at least three years (without options), which means Jimmy can only sign the QO, a 3 year deal, a 3 year deal with a PO, or the Bulls 5 year deal.
The total amount he can make with the QO + max the following season is only 9 million more than the max if he signs now because all the extra money he makes in the other four years is partially offset by the amount he loses on the QO. No way he takes the risk of losing 91 million dollars in order to make 9 million.
This means his only realistic options are the 3+1 or the 5 year deal.

Yeah not locking him up when we had the chance is becoming a catastrophic mistake. Again can't blame Butler for going for it but man that is a huge increase.

The FO missed a chance to look like geniuses by not extending Butler last summer. I'd say if Butler got what he wanted, the vast majority (including myself) would have said he had gotten overpaid, only to later find out they had stolen a max player on a value contract (much like Steph Curry).

Yh, but we may go from be catastrophic mistake and locking him to overpaid player. Do you see Butler gettin 25 mil per year? I would rather get AD or trade for KD or offer KD in FA that money than give it to Butler. And I love Butler but not for 25 mil. You pay MVP that much.

Wouldn't shock me. Some crappy team will overpay him and I'm sure teams will be throwing money around like drunken sailors with all the cap space next year but I don't know if we should do that deal. That really could backfire on us. 15 mil I do no problem but 25 is tough to do.

Thanks - that didn't sound right.
Agree with everything else too, Noah's health and play are a bigger issue than him "bolting in FA". If they keep Taj, they may not want to re-sign Noah, I also think it's likely Noah and the Bulls don't agree with his worth. Something tells me most of us will agree with the Bulls there, unless he resorts to form. In which case of course the Bulls will likely pay him I would imagine.

Okay that made me laugh.

Butler will probably get around 15-16M....under 20M for sure. There is no way that he gets anywhere close to 25M even with the new TV deal, that's just crazy talk.

No, a catastrophic mistake would have been doing what we wanted to do, trade Butler AND a #1 for Barnes.
I'm not upset that Butler will not be severely underpaid. He's worked hard and earned it.

Yeah I don't know about that I never wanted them to do that I wanted them to lock him up at the 12 mil. Im sure there could be a lot of horrible things they could have done but I don't think that makes this better. Like I said I don't blame him either he does deserve it and I have no problem with him going for it. That is just becoming a massive mistake not locking him up. A few mil was kind of ehh whatever but this could really get out of hand.

I listen to the end Cowley's interview. While agree on many thing he says and I can understand logic in what he says. In some he just - sucks. This guy support Thibs all the way no matter what he does and doesnt have one good word for FO. Not mention Bulls biggest troller

Jimmy would be a fool to sign a 1 year deal, one of his best friends is wesley mathews. Just sign a 3 year deal with a player option in the 4th, you bet on yourself once and won, dont push your luck.

So is Cowley still writing off Niko as a "not so stretchy 4?"
