OTish - Wade Baldwin getting cut

Post#1 » by MGB8 » Mon Oct 16, 2017 3:32 pm

Per Woj... recent mid-first rounder. Combo guard. With the Bulls injury (and lack of talent) situation, probably worth a look.

I was high on Baldwin going into the draft but he was totally awful for the Grizzlies. It's a very bad sign that they're giving up on him after only a year.

I'd rather the Bulls take a flier on another PG from that draft class, Kay Felder, who was waived by the Hawks after the Cavs salary-dumped him. Guy tore up the G League and he's more of a penetrating/shot creation type of PG. Bulls don't really have that on this roster.

Payne for Baldwin?

I wanted them to take Baldwin last year but he is pretty bad, only reason I'd want him is his defensive potential.

I'd take him, he's better than Payne

Neither. Hopefully this just emboldens the FO to waive Payne. We don't need another point guard on the roster. Dunn, Grant and Archie are plenty for now.

I think Payne hant been cut yet because of injury, and because we basically gutted the team for him. I think the FO will try to include him in a trade or keep him on IR until next offseason.

I think there is a pretty good chance Payne gets cut today. I feel like the most likely reason for the team not finalizing their roster already is that they are trying to make some sort of trade. Maybe they are working on a Lopez deal where the number of players returning is unknown, or maybe they are trying to trade Payne, and if they can't, they will decline his 4th year option and waive him now so as to not be a distraction. I hope. I don't want his salary on the books past this year, even for the relatively small number it is, and would rather see Ryan get his chance as a third PG.

The Payne trade sucked, but the only asset we actually traded for him was McDermott, who was regressing and playing like a bust in his third NBA season. We didn't even come close to "gutting the team" for Payne.

That said, I don't trust the FO to take their medicine like Memphis did and just admit their mistake to move on. I'm just saying I hope they do that. But they probably won't.

No interest.

I'd much rather see Grant/Dunn/Arci.

I don't know anything about this guy, but in general I think many more "first round picks" should be cut and/or have their 3rd and or 4th year options declined leaguewide. The notion that you should just automatically commit 4 years of cap space to so many players who are replacement level guys is silly to me.

I'd also like to see the 3rd and 4th year options not have to be decided on by teams until just before those seasons, instead of a year in advance like the CBA dictates now.

This is one of the guys we were supposed to pick instead of Valentine.

This is why I'm so glad to be off the treadmill. Assuming we give Butler the supermax at $49M per year in 2019, it would be 7 more years of drafting guys like Baldwin.

Dude's measurables are awesome--Dwyane Wade level awesome. 6'4" in shoes with a 6'11" wingspan, 8'4" standing reach, 38" max vert per DX.

For a team with no real aspirations besides sucking this year, you can do a lot worse than to take a chance on a combo guard with that stuff going on. Some of his scouting report reminds me of Jimmy Butler in college. He's not a good ball handler but is good at drawing fouls, and he was a very good 3P shooter in college. He has the tools to be elite defensively--similar to Kris Dunn in this regard--and he would give Dunn some competition.

The Bulls should seriously consider him.

From what I remember, Baldwin is very long and athletic and can shoot the 3. I'd be inclined to sign him for defensive and shooting potential. If we end up with Doncic in the draft (who can run the offense), Baldwin fits the profile of an off-guard that can guard the opposing point guard. I think I'd pick him up just for that reason.

No, never wanted the Bulls to draft him. Glad they picked Valentine. I really hope they waive Payne now.

We don't need to be interested in every player who has been cut.
