Mikal vs Porter

The question is not which player has better value at the 6th pick. More like going forward with the teams current core which includes.

PG DUNN/PAYNE (BENCH)
SG LAVINE
SF N/A DENZEL (BENCH)
PF LAURI/ PORTIS (BENCH)
C N/A

I think scoring breakdown will be something like

DUNN 15 TO 18 PTS
LAVINE 18 TO 21
DENZEL 8 TO 12
LAURI 17 TO 23
PORTIS 12 TO 18

Mikal 12 TO 14 PTS

Along with being the 2nd or 3rd best defender on the team.
2nd or 3rd best 3 point shooter.
While providing spacing for Dunn and Lavine to drive the ball to the rim.
Defenses must respect his 3 point shot so they will be leary of doubling off him.
He has gotten better all 3 years in college and has a team first outlook.

I don't understand the debate especially when porter is coming off a serious injury and has not looked good on any level other HS.
A Year ago pre BACK SURGERY.

So can we look at the pros and cons of both players without rankings and discuss who is the best fit.

Mikal by a good margin for me. I never liked Porter and that surgery is a no go for me @6. Also firmly believe Porter is more 4 than 3, and we have Lauri.

Who is a better fit for this squad? Undoubtedly Mikal. Who has a higher ceiling? From what we've seen, probably MPJ.

Agree MPJ is more 4 than 3, I think he'll play a bit of both but largely be a more effective player at PF, especially once he's improved his body a bit more. He'll probably play more 3 early in his career because of his lack of strength but that's not the position where his potential lies imo.

I'm undecided. I need to see and hear more of MPJ leading up to the draft. He has the opportunity to overcome some of the question marks that hover over him, especially since we've seen so little of him.

I went with Porter purely based on fingers-crossed faith in his perceived upside.

But my internet scouting tells me Bridges is the better prospect.

I love both players. Bridges is the better player right now. But who will be better 3 years from now or better yet when they are in thier primes? I’m betting my money on Porter Jr. I’ve seen him in person play multiple times and he made me a believer. One thing to keep in mind though is that Bridges has improved every year. I keep saying this but either way the bulls are going to add a good prospect to keep building. A lot of teams and fans would love to be in the position the bulls are in.

It seems like you are not asking a question, but stating that you don't want to draft Porter, think he sucks, and would rather have Mikal Bridges.

Personally, the more I think about it, the more I am on the "just say no to Porter" bandwagon as well, whether Mikal is the guy instead or not I'm unsure.

Most players with 3 years of college will look like a better prospect on tape than high school seniors, not that I disagree with this statement. What scares me most about Porter is simply the back surgery. Strikes me as drafting Brandon Roy, maybe he becomes a star player, but you know he has a major injury that has a really good chance of recurring and ruining his career. Even if he's good for a few years (or great), there is really high odds that you won't be able to rely on him.

Otherwise, Porter was either the #1 or #2 rated prospect this year going in to college. It'd be interesting to see how many people with that high of pre-college rating went on to be very poor in the NBA later.

edit -- did a little research on this, and while HS ratings are pretty highly correlated to future NBA draft success, it's quite common that guys fall from the top few spots to further back in the draft and don't excel in the NBA at all. For that reason, taking Porter based on his HS rating is probably a stretch.

That's where I'm at. If the Magic are crazy enough to take Trae at 5; leaving us to pick between Bamba, Mikal, or Porter; I'd go Bamba, Porter, and then Mikal. Passing on Mikal for Porter is something I'm comfortable with the front office doing, but scares me long term.

If the question is who fits better with today's players, it's unquestionably Bridges. He doesn't need the ball to create value on the court and can push LaVine to the weakest perimeter matchup on defense.

This is my exact board, rationale, and fear as well. You are wise beyond your age, however old you are.

Agree. I missed that as the OP’s bottom line question. Bridges is clearly the best fit. Helll, other than Doncic he’s probably the best fit in the entire draft.

But I don’t think we are in a “fit draft” spot so it doesn’t impact my preferences.

Pretty please can we add Miles Bridges to this SF comparison?

I like him as a fit better than both.

1.5 years younger than Mikal, more athletic, seems to have more dribble and shot creation ability IMO, attacks the basket, plays hard. Not the shooter Mikal is but still a pretty good one with time to improve.

I agree with you that fit to a degree doesn't matter.

However, if Chicago gives LaVine a long-term deal after drafting Porter, I'd argue that you just minimized the chances of the deal paying off. Having 4 players who need the ball and are trying to develop simultaneously is not a good recipe. Hell, I don't even think Porter fits with just Markkanen.

But, if he's really good then it's worth the combustion you'll get.

Same here. It'seems all gonna come down to the workouts. I'll admit that the major reason I don't want Mikal is I didn't want all my frequent checking of the standings all season to be in vain to pick a player projected 9-10.

Porter will rise in workouts and show his back checks out IMO. Still won’t want him as I see him as a smaller Niko that can’t play d. A Dario’s saric clone... that doesn’t impact winning.

Mikal will win games. So smart. Makes the right plays and I’m confident he will develop a dribble drive game and be able to create in spots. His length will help him shoot over defenders.

As for Bamba ... NO THANKS. No offensive ability kills you in today’s game.

I feel like Miles Bridges could end being a better pro than both.

I really Mikal but he screams decorated college player, solid pro.

MPJ has elite, franchise player upside.

If the docs say his back probs won't continue through his career, I take him over Mikal in a heartbeat.

If not, I'd really considered pulling the trigger on Miles over Mikal... especially if Miles kills it in his workout.

This isn't even a question....

Michael Porter Jr EASY....far more talented of a player

Mikal is 1 of the oldest players projected to go in the 1st round an he really just burst into the draft scene this season. 6ppg as a 19yr old freshman....10ppg as a Sophomore.

Michael Porter Jr is a 6'10 SF with isolation skills. You take that an run!

Bulls didn't tank a season for a solid role player/starter in Mikal....we tanked the season for a shot at a superstar. Bulls need to go with the highest ceiling player an that's MPJ in a landslide.
