NBA ratings down pretty big

Post#1 » by kyrv » Mon Jan 21, 2019 12:03 am

https://awfulannouncing.com/nba/nba-ratings-down-tnt-espn-lebron.html

NBA viewership is down 26% on TNT and 6% on ESPN one month into the season. Much of the sharp decline can be attributed to LeBron James’ move to the Western Conference, which has hit viewership for the early-window primetime NBA telecasts particularly hard so far. TNT is averaging 1.79 million viewers after 12 game telecasts, the net’s slowest start to a season in at least a decade.

Those are early returns but like a 26% change is just a HUGE difference right?

Rarely is there just one reason for ratings changing. Lebron out west I guess would make some sense. People thinking they know before the season starts who is going to win, could be another?

What do people think? Are YOU watching less NBA?

(If this needs to get moved to general or closed or whatever have at it (Duh) but I did want to see what my Bullsies thought. For our part, watching the Bulls is has not been as fun the last few years it seems like. Four page post game thread the other day. That's insane to the membrane.

I hears a discussion, not sure if it's true, but 3 pt shooting contest type of games, apparently overall the fans do NOT like those. NBA probably assumed anything where more points are scored will be more liked by fans.

i have no problem with 3 pt shot overall. i have problem with jacking up 3's, can't touch offensive player, non existant fouls they started calling this year. it's just garbage basketball. maybe some teams play high quality garbage basketball but it's still garbage basketball. it hurts me see all teams play pretty much same style of basketball, except bulls but for all kind of wrong reasons.

Bad teams in big markets like NY and Chicago probably have some effect too. Viewership can't be good in these areas.

The NBA needs to ease up on the defensive rules. I really think that's the biggest reasons fans are tuning out.

Plus like the previous poster said, the Knicks and the Bulls sucking doesn't help.

Five teams in the big three markets, four of them suck.

I agree with others above, the 3 pt shooting is pretty crazy, and I'm actually surprised casual fans don't like this, or at least, so far, judging by ratings. And also as mentioned, it's not just the 3 pt shooting, but the how and why and what it looks like.

I am guessing the Harden living on the free throw line does not help a ton. Foul shots during a game are not enjoyable. The live game, is.

Between the absolute dumbing down of games and the 'it's the Warriors title to lose and it doesn't mean anything unless you win a championship' narrative, they've shot themselves in the foot and nearly killed the purpose and thus interest in the regular season.

Agreed.

I like highlights, but I also like watching people run plays and hit mid-range shots. I can't stand the new non-defense - it encourages some really ugly basketball. It's not fun watching guys draw fouls at the half-court line by diving into a defenders arm.

Scoring 140 points in a game with no defense is not that interesting to me. HOWEVER, I would LOVE to watch the Golden State Warriors play against a team that was actually allowed to play defense against them.

If the game only exists to create highlight reel moments, then why not just watch the highlight reel?

There’s only one way to win in the NBA and not enough good players to go around.
I'm not here to argue.

I basically don't watch anymore but I'm tired of these 140-125 point games.

Durant and Davis need to go to the Eastern Conference for the good of the game.

Expect Adam Silver to send Zion to NY to try to fix that. NY and Chicago need help. I think people are getting tired of Charles and Kenny's asses too.

TV is dying, the NBA from what I've read is doing a good job of transitioning over to the internet.

It's hard to get into a show if you already know the outcome of the season finale is a warriors chip.

I agree with Susan.

TV is dying badly.

I wonder what the numbers are like if you include streams.

Return to Chicago Bulls
