I guess this season's draft side-story will be the development and effectiveness of Gafford versus Bol.
I think Gafford was a lot safer pick. Foot injuries with Bigs are deadly, and do we really need yet another
big on the 3-point line? I'll take the floor-running, rim-runner, who doesn't have a foot injury and didn't miss
the season. Bol has unique skill-set for a Big, but he also has some big concerns. At his current weight, I'd say that
there are NBA guards who can muscle him and back him down.
He's also very "high-waisted", a problem defensively since he can't "get low"and it is also a problem in handling, there types get stripped when they put the ball on the floor. He's not such an elite defender that he can recover when beaten and block everything.
Lastly, there are motor and character issues with Bol that Gafford doesn't bring. I stand behind the Gafford pick, he will be a great role player on a team that desperately needs what he brings, rim protection, rebounds, and a guy you can put at the "dunker's spot" and he will finish. He needs to improve his offensive game, shooting, and especially his FT%, all things that player development will be focusing on, I'm sure.
Oh and one other thing I noticed in watching some of the ARK games, they didn't run ANY plays for the guy, none. He got what got on his own, rebounds, put-backs, and lobs (he catches anything and everything thrown in his vicinity). He's also a quick jumper, you can see it on 2nd and 3rd rebounds of his own misses. Kid's on the trampoline, Moses Malone style.
It should be interesting.
