Siakim just got 130 mil
Y’all say Lauri is better right?
Why wouldn’t Lauri ask for 130 if he feels he’s better.
Just a thought.

It's already time to pick up Lauri's option. Time flies.

Possibly because he's not out of contract for a good while yet.
People are getting way too ahead on these Lauri extension talks.

Why would it matter what Lauri asks for?
Just a thought.

Not sure cause I haven't looked at our total salary commitments yet, but I probably would not have picked up Hutch's option.

Lauri isn't extension eligible until next year.
There's literally no point worrying about his extension now because whatever happens this season will radically change what he is perceived to be worth by himself and by the franchise in a year which is the earliest we can discuss.
There's really no reason to give him a max extension next year either since we can always just wait for RFA.

You always hear that small market teams have to overpay to keep their cores together. Chicago does business like a small market team, so....

Contrary to popular opinion, the Bulls haven't had to overpay guys to come here. They've generally gotten guys for much less money to come here than other cities which is separate from their ability to land a star via FA.
I think every team overpays to keep their core together, when you sign a guy, you are effectively agreeing to pay him more than every other team that has the ability to sign him, so by default, you are generally the highest bidder which keeps costs high. The teams that have good salary structure are those with guys who's value vastly exceeds the maximum so they can't actually be paid their worth under the terms of the CBA, guys on rookie deals that vastly outplay them, or those guys who end up vastly out performing their extensions / non-rookie contracts (which is a much smaller subset of guys and typically a situation that lasts a much lesser timeframe).

It's only $2.4 million. It's too early to give up on him for that low price, in my opinion. Also seems unlikely that the savings would amount to anything significant in free agency. Even if it did, there are almost always moves that could be made.

I hear this from people every year and every year free agents make decisions based on a few million more. Hell, you could probably re-sign Hutch for the vet minimum.
It may not sound like much, but it's 1.5 mil over a roster spot hold. So not only is it 1.5 mil less that we can offer a real free agent in year one, but it's really more like 7 or 8 mil or something less that we can offer a real FA over the course of a 4 year contract offer. That's definitely significant.
To me a good rule of thumb is to not pick up rookie scale options that cost you cap space for role player types if they aren't impressive in year 1 and/or 2. Decent role players are too easy to find for the vet minimum AFTER you use your cap space on real players.

Absolutely expected, no brainer paperwork move. You never see rookie scale options declined, even on Anthony Bennett tier players.

Sometimes you do.
Anthony Bennett was actually one of them. So was Jahlil Okafor, Austin Rivers, etc.
