Kris Dunn has quietly been putting some good numbers

Post#1 » by JimmyJammer » Fri Jan 24, 2020 3:17 pm

Seeing the evolution of Dunn during this season has been rather surprising and nice. Over the past three games, he has been averaging 13.3ppg, 5rebs, 3.3assts, along with his usual solid defense. I consider his emergence as one of the good stories of the season. Has he finally gotten it, or is he just playing for a new contract?

Dunn is having the best year of his career. I think he finally gets that his role is as a defensive role player and set up guy. The fact that he has decided he isn't an offensive hub has really helped his impact. Last I checked, he lead the team in rpm.

Unfortunately, his ceiling is as a bench player on a good team. His value is limited even though he is now helping the team more.

Lol at 97% of the board being absolutely certain before the season that Dunn could not and would not really even play at all, let alone actually help us.

If by "finally got it", you mean he's no longer bad and just average, then yes. Unfortunately, that doesn't really move the needle enough, especially for a top 5 pick who was coveted and acquired for a superstar.

Good numbers? They are almost all down slightly from last year.

per 36:

2019-20 - 10.5 ppg, 4.7 assists, 2.9 steals
2018-19 - 13.5 ppg, 7.2 assists, 1.8 steals

PER 19-20: 11.7
PER 18-19: 12.4

In this case, less is more. Rather than try to be an offensive leader who also defends, Kris is now a defense leader who is a secondary contributor on offense. That works better for him.

I don't think he'll keep up his production over the past 3 games. For one thing, two of those three games were against teams with weak (if not outright rancid) backcourts.

His advanced stats #s are the ones that increased.

RPM: -1.40 -> +2.31
DRPM: -0.47 -> +3.54
Offensive Rating: 99 -> 101
Defensive Rating: 112 -> 104
Win Share: 0.6 -> 2.0
VORP: 0.1 -> 0.8

I did see since Dec 1st, when the team in general seems to have adjusted to the new offense, Dunn's 3P% did go up to 31%. If he gets that back to 35% he'll have good 3&D potential. Tobias Harris & Josh richardson don't shoot better than that from 3.

Top 5 pick can be overrated, especially if it comes from a weak draft. Hasheem Thabeet and Derrick Williams come to mind. I am past the point of wanting a superstar Dunn, but rather I want to see an effective Dunn. He has certainly been over the season. Lauri and Zach are already enough return on that trade, considering Butler is not even with the Timberwolves now. Dunn's story is one that every Bulls fan should be happy about because he has the semblance of a trade value now.

Per number is such an hypothetical stat, I have always tried to stay away from it. Instead, I go with the raw numbers and my eyes. He had a rough beginning of the season, with all the drama surrounding him, but it seems like he has obviously settled down on a role. His numbers are starting to reflect that.

I certainly don't cringe when he steps on the court.

He's still weak at the 3, and is turning down open shots (that's good and bad) but his defense is solid as hell and he actually does well with the midrange stuff, I'm sticking with my opinion that he will be a late bloomer and has more room to grow. The right coach, scheme and teammates would help him take the next step.

I think he's playing for that next contract and he will get offers. Its up to the FO to decide if hes worth the investment for the next few years, I wouldn't be shocked to see a Felicio type contract on the table right off the bat.

It's also impressive he's done this when he's been put in some match-ups that he really should not have been in.

The three games right before the last three games, he put up 3.7PPG on 24% shooting.

It'd be a good time to trade him, but instead we'll offer him 11m in the off-season.
It's time for 5 refs.

He’s definitely been better since accepting his role as a defensive specialist guard. With that said, IMO there is no room for anyone sub .50% TS on a winning team, so will look to see if/when he can get his efficiency out of the 40’s (he is close), and even better if he can get above 52-53% by end of season.

Count me in the 3%, it was very frustrating to have discussions about him on here with posters acting like he was Cam Payne level bad

Lol, interesting question. Payne was atrocious at nothing but at also good at nothing. Teague was actually a pretty solid defender lol but one of the worst offensive PGs ever. Tbh though we've had far, far worse PGs. Khalid El Amin, Matt Mahoney, etc...
