doing exactly nothing different. washing your hands immediately after finishing at the gym was a good idea before and it's an even better one now

Currently doing nothing different but I've got two small kids and a mother turning 69 this year so I'm pretty concerned.

I know some have compared this to the other outbreaks from previous years (bird flu, ebola, SARS, zika) but it seems as though the coronavirus has crossed into all continents whereas those others were contained.

The truth is none of us really know how to handle this. I made a big Costco run yesterday so I wouldn’t need to go to the grocery store for awhile. It seemed like others had the same idea as they were also stocking up on items and lots of aisles were cleared out.

I havent stocked up yet and dont think I will until I'm told I'm not allowed to go into work.

I am definitely looking at each door handle with a raised eyebrow...trying to catch each and every door prior to it closing.

Go about your day as if it’s a normal day. Wash your hands, use disinfectant, cook your own meals, don’t shake hands.... handle it in the same way you’d handle being around someone with the flu.

As for masks.... they’re always more useful for those that already have an illness. Masks keep those infected from sneezing all over the place or having their nose dripping on other surfaces.

What exactly makes this Flu strain more deadly or concerning then every other that reportedly kills 10's of thousands every year?

Its best to be precautious and especially with the elderly and those who might have a weakened immune system but my feeling is people will have completely forgotten about the corona virus this time next year.

As I understand it the young ones should be themselves pretty safe (from COVID-19). That is, the disease itself is not as severe in children as in the adult population (and it may be especially bad for the elderly).

I currently work as a consular liaison officer in Paris so I'm spending multiple hours a day in the subway or crowded embassies. I wash my hands, but there's really not much else I can do. I'm not too worried really, the death rate for my age group is low and I don't have any existing medical conditions. I just want to make sure that if I do get it, I don't infect others.

We are pretty close to Italy and my husband and 2 sons were 200 km away from where the virus popped up first in Italy. There is some panic here and schools, starting again tomorrow after a weeks holiday, are spreading cough and sneeze instructions (no joke) and kids that were in a so-called danger zone have to stay at home. My husband has a little cough (he has that every winter for months) and was told to stay in home office.
People panic and buy out groceries and don't really know anything about the virus. The influenza virus is way more dangerous and there never is panic, even though there are way more people infected and a way higher mortality.
Just keep cool and act responsible with hygiene and eat healthy and you are probably save. Vitamin c is great and there are more cures if you look for it.

Most important to keep in mind is don't let this scare you, if you're scared you're vulnerable and you're decision making is clouded.

As others said, maybe washing hands a bit more often. I did decide to put some hand sanitizer in the car so that when I get out of any store (or whatever) and return to the car I immediately clean my hands and face.

The normal flu kills 1 out of 1000 people it infects. Supposedly this kills 20 to 30 per 1000 and puts 200 of them in the hospital. It also spreads airborne and no one has immunity to it. That's the worst case scenario.

OTOH, the number of real cases might be wildly underreported and the death rate might be pretty close to normal flu.

It does seem to spread really fast. People with no symptoms can infect many others.

Regardless, the concern here is the worst case which may or may not be true.

While I agree with most of what you said (about not panicking and staying calm), I don't think you can say that influenza virus is way more dangerous and has a higher mortality (in fact I think the opposite is actually true, but we can't really make a full assumption about the numbers yet).

Certain masks will work.
Ethyl Alcohol on your hands every 5-10 minutes.
Remove your clothes, put them in the washer and take a shower as soon as you get home.
Stock up on food, limit going outside.

All you can do. Eventually a vaccine will be out or drugs to help fight it.
