it continues to get worse, but if we're honest it's been like this for a long, long time. even michael jordan said after his olympic team experience that he would've had to think hard about playing for bob knight in the long-term. of course, knight was on a whole other level in terms of treatment of players
a fully committed professional athlete pushes himself plenty hard. he's happy to take constructive criticism, but he doesn't need the coach to be on his back. and while the less-than-fully-committed pro athlete might recognize that such a coach is beneficial for him, in most cases he'll be even less likely to appreciate that coach than the guy who doesn't need the extra motivation. because of his weaker mentality
