Aside from the Boylen news, Crowley also revealed that the bulls offense was locked in by our lacking analytics department. The coaching staff didn't really have a say in it. Crowley pretty much implied that Boylen was a puppet and Fleming didn't have much influence.

This would explain the sh*tshow we saw with the offense. I'm all for analytics but the application needs to be based on the players available and context.

Re: Bulls Offense: Locked in by analytics
It was pretty shocking to hear that well-respected assistants like Fleming essentially didn't really try too hard to push their ideas since they knew it was pointless due to the "we are all in with analytics but not really" sort of approach that was followed with virtually no coaching input. Wow.

Wasn't the "analytics department" just one guy?

Nope
Weinman leads the department, which includes assistant coach Dean Cooper, special assistant to the head coach Paul Miller, manager of minor league scouting and analytics Miles Abbett and coordinator of basketball analytics Faizan Hasnany.

I saw this but don’t understand it.
So Pax was calling all the shots and Boylen and Fleming had no say on the offense?
That’s hard to believe.

I don't. The offense looked excactly like it was designed by someone who pretends to understand analytics and how to work with them but really doesn't. It also didn't look like what we saw from Boylen last season.

Re: Bulls Offense: Locked in by analytics
The team's leading scorer and "face of the franchise" said, as recently as this past preseason that he didn't even know the Bulls had an analytics dept/team. Thank goodness the house is being cleaned. Nothing of this "news" lets Boylen off the hook for anything. He needs to go and he can take all his assistants with him. New scouts and all... this franchise needs a complete sweeping. Fresh start. We need a whole new coaching staff and a whole new training/med staff/strength and conditioning. Complete tear down from top to bottom. Everything must go.

Not shocking, as teams try to figure out the right balance between limited statistics and established offensive schemes. That said, IMO, our guys like Zach and Dunn would otherwise be jacking up long 2's all day long without a hard stop. Again, our offense suffered most from the fact that we had so many injuries allowing teams to double or triple Zach and Lauri without consequence.

Re: Bulls Offense: Locked in by analytics
Was kind of obvious. We discussed it at length how the Bulls were trying to get shots based on spreadsheets and not basketball principles. Once opposing teams figured it out, they just sat on the shots that the analytics department said were OK to take and ignored the rest of the court.
I was hard on guys like Lauri but this had to be maddening for him.
