If players don't play competitive basketball, NBA style for months upon months and then come back next season...it's gonna be ugly and a lot of injuries will happen.

They will have to find a way to incentivize it. Playing just to play will mean nothing. I just dont now how they could do it.

Well, until now we don't know anything about what teams can win in this thing. If there's nothing to win that is valuable for teams, I see a lot of players either opting out or being held out by their teams. As an example, why would the Warriors risk another Curry injury? Why would the Hawks do it with Trae Young?

In the end, are these guys not pro athletes? This fear of injury can not be a reason for sitting out games. The protective injury liability has gotten out of hand, especially since now the excuse is “players have been out of shape.”

Lol - get in shape. If guys start tearing knees left and right, there is clearly something wrong with their training and style of play.

I understand load management for a guy like Kawhi who wins championships, but come on... protect Trae Young? What is he doing, driving in the paint, bruising for boards and defending hard?

Can't get much more meaningless than this garbage will be.

This seems rather pointless all things considered. Do we really want to risk someone like Zach, Lauri, Wendell, or Coby (or anyone for that matter) playing in these games and tearing something and being out until next March?

I know the same could be said for the final month in any season for non-contenders, but with the 4+ month long layoff and players being out of their normal schedules, seems like we might be more at risk for injuries during this window. Then factoring in virus concerns...

Just doesn't seem worth it for these bottom teams.

*** EDIT ***

Found the article I read a few days ago that gave me the most pause when considering this idea.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/seandeveney/2020/06/30/he-predicted-post-lockout-injury-spike-in-2011-now-he-has-a-warning-for-the-nba/#63bd950b2a91

In December of 2011, when ACL expert Dr. Tim Hewett was director of the Ohio State Sports Health & Performance Institute, he had a dire warning for NBA teams. Hewett had studied the impact that the NFL’s offseason lockout that year was having on injuries in the league and, with the NBA rushing back to action faster than the NFL after its lockout dragged into Thanksgiving weekend, he predicted ligament troubles ahead.

“I could see in the NBA in the range of 2, 3, 4 times higher rates of injury,” Hewett said at the time. “This could be a historic event.”

He was right. In the season-and-a-half that followed, the NBA saw 11 players go down with serious knee ligament injuries. The league had never experienced a two-year span that difficult for ACL injuries—in the previous year, the total number of ACL injuries was three.

Nine years later, the NBA is in a similar situation, rushing back to action in the so-called bubble atmosphere in Orlando at the end of next month. There will be 22 teams returning to finish the season and more than 300 players, all putting their bodies through an unfamiliar grind after three months away from organized NBA training.

It's an interesting debate. At this point the risk vs. rewards is an unknown, and none of us know how it would play out. But at this point I think I'd be in the camp wanting the guys to just prepare for next season, whenever it may be.

Pistons coach Dwane Casey said he took an informal poll among the coaches who are not in Orlando, and he says the majority of them prefer holding their own mini-camps.

"We'd rather do that than go to the bubble," Casey said, "because unlike those teams in Orlando, we wouldn't be playing for the same reason.

"The reason we want these mini-camps is to get our team together, to have that camaraderie, to improve and enjoy some competition. We feel we can do that safely in our own environment. We can't let these guys sit around from March 11 to December without something. It's going to hurt their careers. It's too long of a layoff."

I think that makes way more sense than a 8 team summer league in Chicago which nobody cares about, especially given the circumstances.

I'm surprised people are talking about it being meaningless and nobody cares. I care! I love it! It's more NBA and Bulls basketball! When we haven't had sports in months.

Yeah, NBA summer league is pointless too. But it's still entertaining and I think very fun to watch.

I think it would be kind of cool if the Bulls could win the "championship" of it in their home city. Would be a nice little boost for a young team.

And I'm not really worried about injuries. The bulls are always injured all the time a anyway. So who cares! Lol

Very excited for this!

This is going to mostly be for younger players trying to earn bigger roles next season. So yeah, it should be.

If they don't do it, those teams wouldn't have played in almost 9 months. If anything, this is needed for team and player development.

While I do agree this is strictly a selfish act of the league trying to get money, the part about the players not playing for 9 months also is a big deal.

Its different if you choose not to play and will accept not playing for 9 months, that's ok. But when the league hinders a whole team preventing them from playing for 9 months, its a little different.

Generally the longest a non playoff team is offline is 5 months.

Honestly I have no idea how this will work. If its in September the "real" Bubble would be in their playoff conference finals.

I cant see people not watching the conference finals to watch their scrub teams playing in games that dont even count. So not sure how this is being handled.

If the real concern was 9 months layoff, they would have figured out how to incorporate the remaining teams in Orlando in some small way.

This is a shill way of recouping some money and is something no one will watch while the playoffs are happening. Its worse than JV ball on a Saturday morning after the big Friday night varsity game.

I'm having issues Getting pumped up for this idea, I'll probably watch it maybe dvr it, but I won't be working my schedule around games that's for sure. As it is I'm still wondering if I'll get my enthusiasm back in time for next season.

I feel like when push comes to shove the players on this 8-team league will treat this seriously and compete hard on the floor. They’ve been sitting forever and it’s a chance to bust loose. There’s pride involved.

I think winning a “title” in this weird second league could help carry over some momentum into next season

I will probably watch it because it’s basketball. Yet, it will be pointless since it’s the loser bracket. No one is going to play hard. Maybe use it to determine the order of the picks? Winner gets the first pick, runner up gets the second pick, etc.

The Mavs are getting that from the Warriors. What do they get as compensation?

And add some tangible incentive for Pete’s sake. If not higher lottery odds, an extra pick.
