michael jordan career clutch stats

Post#1 » by dice » Sun Jul 19, 2020 9:46 pm

decided to go back through his career and pore over newspaper columns and videos to document every game-on-the-line shot he ever took (bulls only). includes shots taken with under 25 secs on clock w/ game tied or bulls trailing by 3 or less (except non-3pt shots taken w/ team trailing by exactly 3). there are probably some misses w/ plenty of time on clock that are not included due to lack of available game video to clarify unclear newspaper reporting. here are the results:

47.5% TS (playoffs included) - excellent
24/72 2PT, 6/20 3PT, 28/33 FT in regular season
7/11 2PT, 1/3 3PT, 6/6 FT in playoffs, including 2 defining series-ending shots ("the shot" and bulls career capper in utah)

rookie season - 2/10 FG in regular season (no 3PT attempts), no FTs
rookie playoffs - tie game w/ 25 secs left at home vs bucks in game 3 (trailing 2-0 in series), curls around screen and nails baseline J off baseline OB pass, bulls win

2nd season:

-opening night at home vs cavs, fouled on jumper in overtime w/ 20 secs in tie game, rims out first, swishes 2nd, bulls win. breaks foot next game
-playoffs: game 2 at boston after blowout loss in game 1 - down 2, phantom fouled on 3PT attempt at buzzer, makes both FTs to send game to OT (only got 2FTs when fouled on 3PT attempt in those days - rightfully so). misses midrange in tie game w/ 4 secs left in OT, bird just misses bomb at buzzer at other end, bulls go on to lose in 2OT, jordan scores 63

remainder of bulls career (points trailing by, shot type, result, date, oppt., description), playoffs in bold:

also eaton forced a clutch TO coming to double him at the end of one game

kinda fascinating to go through the chicago tribune stuff, particularly from the '80s. seeing bernie lincicome's face on every page 1 of the sports section was a flashback to my adolescence. also interesting that the bulls were regularly NOT page 1 sports news until they started winning titles. and even then they'd occasionally only get a page 1 blurb (e.g. "bulls rout pacers, coverage on page 3")

by the way, you can get a 1 week free trial of almost every newspaper's vaults at newspapers.com. even back into the 1800s. including outside the US. gonna try to dive into larry bird's career before my week is up

Awesome! I too miss Bernie he was a big part of my adolescent Bulls love. He ended up in Denver? I will never forget when Skip took over and his first article made me want to strangle him. He has made a career though off of people wanting to strangle him though. Kinda sucks I guess your brother is known at being elite at his craft and you are known as a parody. Still likely has a much more fun life than Rick.

Anyway I definitely want to see the Larry Bird Version of this.

I know Sham did something like this too. I like when people do all the work for me so I don’t have to sift through everything myself. American laziness gotta love it!

47.9% doesn't seem all that excellent. What are the typical stats for comparable guys?

you have to consider that fast break opportunities at the very end of games are exceedingly rare and that the range of offensive sets are limited in quarter-ending situations (a lot of ball movement is ill-advised when you're working for the last shot). it's usually an ISO, so you're often forced to settle for a tough shot. also, if you're a "closer" there's a good chance you'll be facing a double team, particularly when the clock is running down and passing is less of an option

What are the typical stats for comparable guys?

according to this, the league average FG% for shots to tie or take lead in last 24 seconds is 28.3% in the playoffs:

https://www.espn.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/58575/lebron-james-isnt-clutch-think-again

this suggests that the overall reg. season and postseason number is 29.8% (large 5 year sample):

http://www.82games.com/gamewinningshots.htm

jordan's overall career FG% in such situations was 36.2% (though, as mentioned, i probably missed a few of his unsuccessful attempts). and obviously his FT shooting was only helping him

kobe's overall career FG% in such situations was 31.3%:

Appreciate the information, Jordan was definitely well above league average. Looks like LeBron was 34% at least in that sample size, not sure if he got better or worse as his career went on.

I guess thinking through end game scenarios have these things working against the offense:
1: Defending team very often has a defensive substitution squad and will have their absolute best defenders on the floor.
2: Defending team will be playing with maximum defensive effort relative to other parts of the game.
3: Offensive team will often hold to shoot with zero on the clock which typically means an isolation or just one pass and the defense only needs to stay strong for a few seconds during that final move.
4: Offensive team will often have to take the shot off a throw in with very little time on the clock and not really have the opportunity to do almost anything.

Add those things up, and I suppose it's no surprise the overall FG% is way down. I knew it was decently worse, but I didn't realize it was that much worse that mid 30% was actually really good.
