This was used to contrast him with Trubisky who is considered to be not competent. Being described as competent is generally a double-edged sword...steady, but not spectacular. What I'm hearing more now is that Foles is a "streaky" QB. In my experience, Foles is the first player I can recall who was described as competent and streaky.
Dave Wannstedt characterized the Bears as having a "top 25% offense and a bottom 25% offense." Probably true to this point. They need at least a competent QB to be successful, but streaky isn't something I want in my competent QB.
You know, I don’t know. Foles is not a mystery. Coach is going to like that the overall game plan is being followed as far as being attempted. That is a different thing than playcalling. For myself, when I watch Foles operate, I can see what he’s trying to do, what mode the attack is, even on a play to play basis. He’s decisive. And he’s on control of the team. If he executes is a different thing to watch for. Nagy now has flexibility to call plays from the shotgun, and taking drops. And the QB can check out of plays, you gotta believe that is in the long term plans as well. Foles has played some tough defense in his starts. The bottom line will be points on the board against teams the Bears should beat. No excuses for struggling to put points up like the Bears have had against weaker defense. I’ll settle for streaky as long as he gets streaky from quarter to quarter rather than game to game.
