Pick Protection?

Post#1 » by pipfan » Sat May 1, 2021 4:58 pm

I still have not seen-what if we move up to the top 4 this year and keep the pick?
Does the debt to the Magic roll over to 2022 (and 2024), or just 2023?
I can't find an answer anywhere

I think it was discussed in another thread. If the Bulls land a top 4 pick this year, next year’s unprotected 1st goes to Orlando. Same scenario in 2023.

So if we convey this year (outside the top 4) then hit top 4 in 2023 we convey unprotected in 2024? Or if we don’t hit top 4 in 2022 it conveys unprotected in 2023?

Thanks for the info!

If we send this year's 5-30 pick then we keep 2022 and the 2023 pick is still top 4 protected.
If we end up top 4 this year then we send 2022 and the 2023 pick trade moves to 2024 top 4 protected because of the Stepian rule.

2021 Pick

The 2021 pick is top-4 protected. If the Bulls hit the lottery and the pick doesn't convey, the Magic get our 2022 pick.

The 2022 pick is top-3 protected. If the Bulls hit the lottery and the pick doesn't convey, the Magic would receive the Bulls’ second-round pick in 2024 and the Bulls’ second-round pick in 2025.

2023 Pick

If the Magic get our 2021 pick, they also get our 2023 1st round pick. If the Magic don't get our 2021 pick, but get our 2022 pick, they also get our 2024 1st round pick.

If we wind up with a top-4 this year, and a top-3 pick in 2022, the Magic get our 1st round pick in 2023 (because we wouldn't be trading away consecutive 1st-rounders).

Whether the second pick first becomes due in 2023 or 2024, it contains the same protections. Top-4 protected the first year, and if it doesn't convey, Top-3 protected the 2nd year.

And again, if the pick doesn't convey during the 2nd year, the Magic would receive the Bulls’ second-round pick in 2026 and the Bulls’ second-round pick in 2027.

In the extremely unlikely event the Bulls get a top 4 pick this year and top 3 pick next year, is the 2023 pick completely unprotected that goes to the Magic? It also sounds like in this scenario second round picks go to Orlando as well in the 2024 and 2025 drafts.

No my question is what happens if the Bulls win the lottery in consecutive years. If that happens the Bulls haven’t given any picks to Orlando yet. I was assuming from what you said that was the first pick going out to Orlando goes out in 2023 and that pick is completely unprotected. Is that not correct?

There's no unprotected pick ever.

If the Bulls win the lottery in consecutive years (2021 and 2022), the Magic don't get that pick, they get two 2-rounders instead.

Oh ok. Thanks for the clarification. That would really suck for Orlando but it would also mean that the Bulls would not be in the playoffs next year making this trade a failure.

Well, if we miss the playoffs next year, get lucky and land the #1 overall pick and he's a sure-fire superstar, the trade would still technically be a success. You really couldn't say that getting Vuc, a top-4 pick in 2021 and the #1 pick in 2022 for WCJ, our 2023 1st-rounder (still top-4 protected) and two 2nd-rounders isn't a great trade.

Though it would certainly be mostly pure luck, and definitely not the way it was planned, but it would still be an awesome deal.

No I hear you in that but not making the playoffs next year would be disappointing. There has to be some progression with this core next year. Now if we are talking about best case hypotheticals let’s say the Bulls get a top 4 pick this year and next year finish the regular season as a 7 seed but 15 games over .500 but lose 2 consecutive play in games and fall into the lottery only to land a top 3 pick they would be going into 2023 with 2 top 3 lottery picks and a team that got better from this year. Talk about a dream scenario.
