I've never been particularly worried about the defense, it's always been the Bulls inability to run any offense outside of isos or bad, poorly timed passes to bad, reticent shooters
Much of it is roster construction but it's also on Billy. Better coaches have done more with less than he has. The Bulls have similar talent to the Celtics and yet look much worse
How is this true, at all?
Tatum > Derozan
Brown > Zach
Smart > Caruso
Williams, Horford > Vuc
The one thing the Bulls had going for them were more depth pieces, but then 7 injuries happen.
If you bought the koolaid that Brown and Tatum suck since they couldn’t carry Schroder, Horford and late first round picks to some wins, blame yourself. They figured out their chemistry problems (I didn’t expect that), and the two continue to be one of the best and youngest two-way wing tandems in the league.
Jaylen and Jason have had better careers and more playoff success than Demar and Zach with way less games under their belts. If Vuc hadn’t tumbled to new lows, Lonzo/Caruso/Pat missed a crucial chunk of the season, it’d be much different. But as it stands, our top-3 is much worse right now than their top-3, and our supporting cast is injured or developing.
DDR is clearly having a better season that Jaylen Brown and was asked to carry the team's offense all season long. We saw what happened when Tatum was out and Brown had to carry the team, it was a disaster.
Zach pre-knee injury was playing as well as Tatum ever has and last season they weren't far apart, Lavine averaging significantly better offensive efficiency, Tatum better on D
I disagree that Smart is better than Caruso,I think most teams would much rather have Caruso for the same money
Horford isn't better than Vuc, the man is averaging 10/7/3 and isn't some elite defender nor can he shoot. Vuc is averaging 18/11/3. If you value Horford's defense more, then thats fine but let's not pretend like he's the better overall player.
I disagree entirely on Tatum or Brown having a better career than DDR, they have less AllNBA teams and less All-star appearances, they also have less playoff games played. The Celtics got swept in the frist round the Nets last season. DDR and Lowry's TOR teams beat everyone in the East except for Lebron superteams.
My point is, the Bulls talent level is comparable to the Celtics. Injuries notwithstanding.
Please… Tatum has been a #1 option in two ECFs and he’s barely 22yo. He’s got 51 career playoff games to Demar’s 58, and he has a higher career PER in both regular and playoff stats. He’s a much more competent defender.
Zach has yet to complete a season where he plays well for more than 2 months, let alone a post-season. He’s more comparable to Brown with his seasonal inconsistencies and flaws (shooting vs defense), however, one wonders whether a more balanced two-way player is a better than a shot-making sieve.
The whole reason I expected the Bulls to trump Boston was because we had a really deep rotation, with Lonzo, Pat, Coby being able to grow and develop behind a solid cast. All the injuries screwed it up. Also killed trade deadline options since everybody had one ailment or another.
But the C’s top guys are more talented. Not even close.
