Coby's Next Contract
With the emergence of Coby's dominant play, he is criminally underpaid. We were able to get him on a great value deal at the time. If the FO plans to build with him, we're going to have to extend him next year. Looking at some comparable players around the league, where do you guys think we'll be able to settle on salary wise.
Quickley-$32 mil
Derrick White- $27 mil
Garland-$37 mil
Murray- $50 mil
FVV-$42 mil
Bane-$37 mil
Herro-$31 mil

Re: Coby's Next Contract
I think if they re-sign Giddey (which I think they will) then they should continue with Coby too. The question is how much will both players cost...? And how much will that limit roster flexibility going forward? I like both players, but this team still needs more talent (even after you include Matas).

Yeah that's a big part of my hesitation. With the ridiculous Pat contract, we're conceivably going to be near $100 million between 3 players without having a franchise player on the roster. If the basketball Gods bless us at the lottery that could change a lot though.

We can’t extend him for a fair price . He will become an unrestricted free agent.

He’s getting a max contract if he plays like this all next next season. He playing like top 15 player right now.

Maybe the Bulls can use an asset like the Portland pick to get rid of Patrick Williams? I say that, but wouldn't be surprised if AK still believes in him. And hey....maybe he improves a little next year and his contract isn't looked at as being as bad as it is right now...?
As for the rest of it...I don't want the team to lock into a core of Coby, Giddey and Matas too much, but I also don't know the cap numbers and future predictions when it comes to salaries.

I cannot see us using a pick to dump a contract.

I don't even see that POR pick as an asset anymore, but I agree they probably won't offer it.

He is way more clutch and has much higher IQ than Zach. Way better hand too. Zach is a better athlete and pure shooter.

AKME gave Pat Williams a 5 year contract but only gave Coby/Ayo a 3 year contract. What a shame as Coby could have been locked away even longer.

he is absolutely not a top 15 player. since the lavine trade:
24/4/4 on 62% TS and the usual little defense. know what lavine was w/ the bulls this year?
24/5/4 on 64%
but hey, artie maxed out lavine, so...

I don't have enough confidence that Coby can keep up this level of play next season. Would rather max him after a year of good play than pay him $30/yr after this season.

Re: Coby's Next Contract
Yeah. Coby isn’t a Max player. He still struggles mightily against teams with good interior defense (and still gives you little on D). Not a trajectory changer like Ja, nor a Kyrie or Ant level superstar talent. Not to mention that a top 15 player who is an offensive player doesn’t have 7 point games like he just did against OKC.
Coby is very similar to Cam Thomas on the Nets. Thomas this season has scored more (better season long FTA), shot a touch worse, assisted others a tiny bit less…. But very comparable. And I don’t think anyone is thinking of maxing Cam Thomas.
White is a year and a half older than Cam Thomas, too. Right now, I wouldn’t pay Thomas more than Giddey, and I wouldn’t pay either over 35 M per year, which is still a ton. Even then, that is a big risk on either/both - 30M would be, too, but better.

Top 15? Let's not go crazy. More closer to top 50.

I would be fine with a 5 year deal starting at around 35 million per.

We literally CANNOT give Coby an extension he would accept this Summer. We cannot even offer him $20 million.

Coby is clutch unlike LaVine who basically forgot how to play in close games in the 4th.

That’s ridiculous. He just won Eastern Conference player of the month. And he deserved it. I can’t take anything you say seriously about any of our players after this take.

he's not close to the top 50 by any metric other than scoring. this is like lavine deja vu from years ago. wish people would learn
if coby is your 2nd best player (which is what a top 50 player is), you're in trouble
and unless the team is planning on being deep in the playoffs in close games, i don't care how clutch he is. and we have no idea whether he can be clutch in the playoffs.
