2025 Free Agency News/Rumors

Post#1 » by nomorezorro » Sat Jun 21, 2025 10:04 pm

didn’t see a thread on this yet - feel free to delete if i missed something, but i figured the time was about right.

Key Dates

June 30: Each NBA team may begin negotiating with all other upcoming free agents (beginning at 6 p.m. ET)

July 6: Each NBA team may begin signing free agents to contracts (12:01 p.m. ET)

and the impetus for starting this thread: today, jake fischer joined the chorus of people reporting that we’re interested in (sigh) jonathan kuminga.

It does seem, at this juncture, that the most likely outcome for the Warriors' restricted free agent swingman is a return to Golden State.

However …

Sources say that Chicago has as an ongoing interest in the 22-year-old forward. This tracks with past interest that the Bulls have shown in Kuminga in previous trade discussions with Golden State over the past two seasons involving players such as Alex Caruso, Zach LaVine and Nikola Vučević.

The reality for Kuminga is that a clearer read on his summer landscape is unlikely to reveal itself until Kevin Durant's trade future is resolved and the NBA's most accomplished scoring forward widely regarded as available has a new team. There is a belief among some rival teams, for example, that Miami could emerge as a potential Kuminga suitor — among various guards and swingmen that the Heat could target — if Pat Riley and Co. do not win the Durant Trade Sweepstakes.

Kuminga would be a horrible idea.

Although I don't like the fit, he looks massive. Rumor has it he put on 20 lbs this off season. Heading into contract year, he could be an allstar on the right team.

If moving Vuc, I still say do it for the value in that alone. Let him ball next year, if fit is bad, we may have an all star or fringe all star to trade for a piece that does. There is good value there if his contract can be negotiated properly.

Kuminga is not an All-Star talent or even fringe All-Star talent.

NO KUMINGA.

Roster glut at PF.

Kuminga doesn’t have the 3 ball to play the 3.

KC / CHSN:
. “I’ve been saying for a while in my from my seat, they’ve got to try to look to trade either Ayo or Coby because I think it’ll be very hard to re-sign both of them after next year when they both have unrestricted free agency. So I think you got to get out in front of things like that. What’s crazy is they value both those players highly, and they obviously are a big part of how they want to play stylistically, to your point, the stylistic change. So I think that’d be a tough decision to make but that’s a front office’s job, to make hard decisions.”

Given that AK wants to win right now, I think a Coby trade is unlikely.

Why do people keep saying AK wants to win now? You don't get younger to win now.

I think the salary math is bad for this because of base year compensation rules.

Here is the thing, as much as I don't like the idea of Kuminga on the Bulls, if all it took was Vooch and some filler players, I'd be totally okay with it because he is still extremely young and if you're going to invest a big contract on a player, I'd much rather the Bulls invest in a YOUNG player, than a player that is on the downhill of their peak.

There are positives, he would fill an immediate need at the power forward spot for the Bulls, and he is a a pretty good cutter and would be a great lob threat for Giddey. He would also fit in terms of playing fast is what I suspect the Bulls front office has FINALLY settled on with regards to how they want the Bulls to play.

Now, if a trade were to happen, you'd have to think that is going to get close to 30 million per season, and as a team, are you going to want to invest in a team with Giddey and Kuminga as your two centerpieces? And pray to god that Matas becomes that number one option? As much as I like Matas, I still need to see more before I can envision him as a true franchise player - basically, his future is still up in the air for me.

Giddey with a combination of Kuminga, you're talking about two offensive end contributors who don't bring all that much, if at all on the defensive end, that means, Matas, and whoever is at the centre spot and the other guard spot to hold a massive load on the defensive end to make up for those two players defensive deficiencies. I think you can get away with one of your big contract players to be one dimensional, but to have two of them, is going to mean, that you're going to have to stack the team with defensive players to cover for them whenever they are on the floor, which you suspect they would need to be quite a bit as they will probably be the highest players on the team for the long term.

I see positives in adding Kuminga, but I see more negatives as a whole.

Only way I’m good with Kuminga is if it’s a 3/60 deal and it’s for Pat and his 4/76 deal

I’m willing to take a chance on Kuminga, he’s only 22. Especially if Vucevic is the main salary piece going out. If AK “hits” on this kid then 25-30M per will turn out to be a steal.

Take Coward @12 and find a way to add a later pick and grab a rim protector (Kalkbrenner, Raynaud).
We are missing a lot of layups right now as a team, and that is on me... It’s my job to make sure we’re ready to make our layups." - Thibodeau.

Everyone here hates Kuminga, but whenever I see him play I see future star. This guy is going to average 25 a game if he is ever unleashed.

On court processing speed, shooting and lack of defensive awareness. Dude was drafted to be project most of those guys don’t hit until second contract.

We have done the same thing with Dalen Terry. But if you are the team that drafts him you have to hope that player resigns for their second contract at bargain price.

Warriors don’t look like that have that situation as they kinda “Drummond” him.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

I don't hate Kuminga, I'm not a huge fan that he's about to get a huge pay day without really showing too much. If the Bulls get him, they'll likely have him and Giddey on 30m per year deals and that's going to probably mean that Coby is gone as I doubt they'll pay 3 players the same big money. (I'm OK with trading Coby, btw).

I actually like Kuminga and was lobbying trading for him last season and (maybe?) the season before.

Kuminga needs to work hard on his shooting (if only the Bulls had a shooting coach that was good with young players and had proven record of improving their shots...) and become at least adequate on defence. He has tremendous talent and athleticism, he just needs to work on the basic basketball skills and he can be a beast, IMO.
Here to argue about nonsensical things and suck away your joy. :kissmybutt:

Per 36 he already averages 22 a game and in the 40 career games he's played 30 or more minutes he's averaged around 21 a game. This is with him not even being featured as the main option. He's fairly elite athletically and over his career has shot very well from the field. He's a bad three point shooter but he offsets that a bit by getting to the line. He's basically drawing fouls at a DeRozan level rate.
